Sorry, but there's a difference between the sexes. The difference does imply sexist changes. We will not compete in breast-feeding competitions.
Anyone who wants to make them completely equal will have to start at the chromosome-level.

This has nothing to do with sexual preference. It has to do with implied inequality with regards to a topic (car ownership) where gender really doesn't - and shouldn't, IMHO - matter.
I happen to agree that women and men will never be the same as far as physical and physiological differences are concerned. Men can't have babies (they don't have the hips for it  ). However, i do think women and men should be treated as equals in every way otherwise possible.

Totally agree, but not a fan of the word "equal", that implies a comparison. "Different" would be a better word IMO. The sexes really are different, and that's a good thing. I'd never get along with a guy on a very close level like I would a woman.

After reading the first line I thought you were talking about cars which were more likely to be owned by a woman or a car characterized as a 'female car', for instance the new VW Beetles. Male and own one? Turn in your man card!
But I agree with you that the majority of the car show participants don't work on their own cars. Anecdotally, a buddy of mine's dad owns an old vette and competes. He drives his for fun during the summer but lets a pro do the work to keep it in shape and running top notch. Undercarriage is clean, no dings or damage, but it is black and looks like a car that gets used. Every single time, he loses to a guy who has the same model and year but the only time the car ever moves is to go in or out of the trailer. It doesn't even get started to do that!
That right there is a shame. If you own a beautiful piece of engineering, drive and enjoy it otherwise it is just collecting dust. One of the wing places nearby here has a get together every other week for car people to come out and show off their rides. There is a nice little red ferrari that shows up from time to time, third owner. When he bought it, less than 20k miles. Now it has over 200k. He has taken it camping to the middle of nowhere, driven it across the country with his son... you know, enjoyed the hell out of it. Proper car love right there.

Trying to get more women involved in an area generally dominated by men... I don't have an issue with that.
A friend has a 67 Mustang convertible that he maintains; yes, he does the work on his car.
And, he is involved in a local car club. For the most part, car shows for him are a social atmosphere; the plaques he can earn are fun, but not what is important.
So, if you enjoy seeing women with their cars... good!

Is it good ? Is it bad ? I don't know. It depends on the way it is presented to the participants.
It is usually the way that "male dominated" hobbies events try to attract women into their world.
It happens for cars, but for all types of hobbies.
One thing to remember that it is still hard for women to get into traditional male work and hobbies; like car shows and car modifications (and car maintenance).
Just look at our domain of work, it is male dominated and there are no signs that it will change and on the other side, nursing is female dominated and there are no signs that it is changing.
I'd rather be phishing!

You're over thinking it. Snap out of it man and grab your balls. There are girly cars out there that chicks usually drive. Nothing wrong with cars tailored to chicks and some tailored to guys. People shouldn't be afraid to embrace their gender.

But a car show is about the uniqueness of, or modifications made to the car - not the owner of the car. Like I said, I understand the motivation, I'm just questioning whether or not its perpetuating the presumed inequality between the genders within a context where that inequality should be moot.
I'm happy that there are women out there that want to participate, but expecting/advocating special treatment or recognition simply because they're women participating in a predominantly male hobby exhibits a misplaced sense of entitlement.

You're being dramatic and over thinking it, reading WAAAAAAY to much into it. It's the analytical programmer in you. Been there done that myself. However, most women are tough little creatures and aren't nearly as sensitive as this, there are tons of chicks adult enough to laugh at the crap you're talking about man. It's a joke. Stop being so sensitive about it, that's the number one thing that annoys a real women (not an overgrown girl) with the IT type of guy.

In a whole other life I did a lot of restorations for people who wanted to have the car without the work so I would agree with you.
What they could do is have a class for documented self-restoration. There will always be parts of the job that amateurs may not be good at or able to do but if they can show that they did the greater part of the job then that should garner more votes than a vehicle that was professionally restored.

I guess the idea behind it is same as that with women's chess tournaments. Historically, because it's a male dominated field, this allows women to get into tournaments, win some prizes, and encourage more participation from women. After a few years or decades of doing this, I assume they'd just do away with women specific versions (both for chess and for car competitions).

Went to mom's last night as she wanted me to look at an email from her granddaughter. She had tried the link but it did not work.
When I look at it, the first think that struck me was the subject was "From (granddaughter's name)".
The in the body it said "Good afternoon (mom's email address)" then had a link followed by my niece's email at the bottom.
Now my niece would have said "Hi, Grandma!" At the very least.
So full virus scan of computer, which thankfully showed no problems.
Well mom is 87 and normally will not open an email that looks odd, but one from her granddaughter, she thought would be safe.

Until a series of injuries, my father, at 83, could wipe his HDD and reload Windows, office, Lotus Notes, Dragon Speak, etc etc etc. He even was starting to mess with Open Office . . . . and sent much too much email.
Also, after I once found his browser screen (literally) half hidden by tool bars, I taught him the wonders of malware scans and how to use the Spybot advanced mode to eliminate junk from his startup group.
It's all, in no small part, a mind-set as to what you can/cannot do, or perhaps often what one should/should-not do for their age.

My FIL used to have so many toolbars that he had about 2 inches of viewable browser space. I told him he was an idiot and preceeded to fix it for him and also told him that he actually doesn't need any of the B.S. toolbars. He enjoys the internet a lot more now.
