socialism

I wonder about the interpretation of communism, socialism and social.

Social is a word that first appeared with the word "liberal". Liberal meant that every one should be able to find the way in the society he wanted to work for. The more hard you work - the more you got. Social was one aspect of being liberal. That meant the "strong" has to care for the "weak" (not go give him everything, but so that the weak was able to get stronger and work for his own). It's based on the principles of knighthood.

Socialism was an idea (never invented in reality) by Karl Marx. He said that every one should care for everybody else. Everyone should habe the same rights and everyone should have everything he needed to life. The basic idea was a good one I think, but it can never work (so the idea is a bad one I think).

Communism is the socialism in reality. The idea of "everone is same" will be changed to "everyone without power is same and everyone with power is more same". So some people do all the work and some people get all the profits. Communism is also oppressive.

So the question is, why do people think that a health care is socialism or communism? It's of course regulation and control by the government, but it's not communism. In communism no health care is needed, because no one has to pay the doctor.

Well, health care can even be capitalism. Why? Because the workers are healthier and so the productivity can grow. A good health care could lead to a higher gross national product, more taxes and could fund itself.
But that's the problem perhaps in US and even in Europe (where a health care exists in most coutries) - the most ideas are not good, because the are made by politicians and most politicians can't handle any money.

Grandma Levy finally talked her niece, who lived a riotous life, into joining temple.
"Tell me, Rabbi," Grandma Levy asked, "will my niece have her sins forgiven after all her years of reckless living?"
"Yes, of course. Remember: the greater the number of sins, the greater the glory." Grandma Levy groaned.
"Really, Rabbi? I sure wish I'd known that fifty years ago!" Roll eyes |

Meanwhile, here in the US, the FBI has released statistics that show that most violent crimes are committed with baseball bats. I'm sure it won't be long before baseball bats won't be available for purchase by the public (or the BATFE will classify them as title 2 weapons, and you'll have to pay for a $200 tax stamp in order to own one).

Until the last few years, the vast majority of baseball bats sold in the UK were sold in Northern Ireland, which had, to my knowledge, not a single baseball team.

The presence of baseball bats in the UK is evidence of US cultural imperialism - in my younger days British thugs made do with pickaxe handles

Did you know that the chance to be killed by a weapon rises significantly, when you bring you own weapon to protect yourself against raids?

And: Yes! I'm totally against the banning of weapons!

The chance of dying of cancer increases significantly if you visit the doctor to ask whether or nor that big lump growing on you is cancerous; might make you think twice about visiting the doctor after all.

I thought most people around here knew about the whole correlation != causation thing.

Well, your example isn't the same. It would be if the chance of dying of cancer would correlate with a doctors visit. Of course if you believe in dying of cancer the chance increases.

People who don't have strange growths on themselves don't visit the doctor to ask if the strange growths are cancerous. But if you do have a strange growth, then it's good to visit the doctor, even though it puts you into the "visiting the doctor for a strange growth" category, which is a category of people likely to die of cancer.

People who live in safe areas don't buy self defense weapons often. But if you live in a dangerous, violent area, then buying a self defense weapon is a good idea, despite it putting you into the category of "people who bought a self defense weapon", which is a category of people likely to die a violent death.

People who don't go space walking in outer space don't put on space suits. But if you are space walking in outer space, it's a good idea to put on a space suit, even though it puts you into the category of "people who put on space suits", which is a category of people likely to die in an orbital re-entry accident.

The rule of thumb is to do stuff that makes sense for you, not do stuff based on statistics with simple correlations.
GeneralRe: Wow - First, They Took Your Guns...member_Peeves11 Dec '12 - 2:07
Isn't it the other way round? If you visit the doctor, there is a chance of treating the cancer. If you don't, you'll definintely die of it.

For the record, my position on guns (or any weapons of self defense) is close to John's. (*close to*, because I'm not really sure of his views...)

GeneralRe: Wow - First, They Took Your Guns...memberjesarg11 Dec '12 - 4:08
Yes, if you visit the doctor, there's a chance of the cancer being treated. But the vast majority of people who don't visit the doctor for cancer don't have cancer, so if you're in that category, you're unlikely to die of cancer.

Also, trying to decrease your chance of dying of cancer by statistically associating yourself with non-cancerous people when you do have cancer is a really bad idea, but it's the right thing to do if you base your decisions on correlation statistics.

See my post above.
