Serious answer? If there was a major earthquake in California, for instance, it may take some time to restore power, water, etc. and food supplies may be in short order.
We are told to keep at least 3 days supply of food and water for each person but it would be prudent to keep more.

There are also a large number of campers, hikers, preppers, survivalists, etc. in the USA that spend a fortune on these things; hence the business. If you get the National Geographic channel and can endure some really wacky people check out a program called "Doomsday Preppers". It is great fun.

They are painted either side of a zebra (pedestrian) crossing and you are not allowed to stop or park your vehicle between those lines.
