So much of England is about survival, rather than living.
You can compare almost any town in England to any in Europe and come to the same conclusion, with the exception of Germany, which seems to equal England for sheer drudgery.
Everywhere else in Europe I have been has 'lifestyle' in some form or another. Beautiful architecture, great restaurants, deep culture, beautiful countryside (even Germany does well in this respect) with its associated activities, climbing, skiing, sailing.
Yet the heartland of England is just one desperate vast expanse of sheer drudgery. Survival. Hopelessness....

If you leave out the north, Luton, Croydon, Slough, Reading, Romford, Southend, Orpington and Dover you'll probably be alright.

Don't you all just love when business people and PR mouthpieces use words like "excited" to refer to write-offs?

If one morning I woke up and realized I took a decision that flopped to the tune of $6 billion, I guess I'd be many things, but excited wouldn't be one of them.

I think what matters is what Patents Google are retaining. They maybe carry more value than the actual handset division!
In real terms, Google could still be in a better place.
A) Buy company and all associated patents.
B) Retain patents and sell company
C) Stop having to spend vast amounts shoring up a cash loss business.
Probably recoup their initial outlay quite quickly.

No, this is what happens when an Ad Agency (no, they are not a Software Company) purchases a Hardware Manufacturer. 
I hope that Lenovo will preserve the brand just like they did with the Thinkpad. Now they have one of the best PC and Mobile Hardware Manufacturing units.

Google's losses are at most ~$2bn from the deal; depending on what they get our of the patents and R&D bits they're keeping.
In addition to the ~3bn from selling the phone division to Lenovo they got ~$2bn from the modem division, Motorola had ~$3bn of cash at the time of the acquisition, and lastly the operating losses/expenses they took while restructuring the company netted them about $2bn in tax writeoffs. Those collectively add up to ~10bn out of the ~12bn Google spent.
Lastly the rumor mill[^] says that selling Moto's phone division was part of a quid pro quo they made with Samsung to stop the latter from continuing to customize it's way towards a fork and bring its Android implementation back towards native. If true, that achievement itself is probably worth billions down the line.
