Interesting. I didn't see it mentioned in this article but I have seen this happen in the past and the police officers have actually charged people with interference of police business.

I don't see how this is any different from mobile-apps that tell you where speed traps are or where cops are using radar/laser guns on a highway (updated live by its user base).

If that is true, then that only proves the assertion by many that traffic ticketing is mostly for raising revenue rather than traffic safety. Police Officers then become nothing more than armed tax collectors.

I recently found out that most red light cameras in Columbus, OH are operated by a private company who gets most of the profits from the fines, and the Police Department gets a percentage.

Yeah, I've read a few stories recently about that. I hear they're being successfully challenged in most cases. And it looks like the OH State Legislature is going to outlaw there use.

In college I studies OBDII (the technology for computers on vehicles) and found that they were talking about implementing a feature in a future version of OBD (on board diagnostics) to report your speed at various checkpoints along the road.
So, if you were driving around and passed a sensor on the road going too fast your own car would report you to the police and a ticket would be in the mail before you even got home. Luckily, they haven't implemented that yet.

I'm sure if I were to name one that you'd argue that it's primary purpose is about raising revenue. And I might agree with you if it were a common event like traffic ticketing. But robbing a bank, for instance, is not a common event, at least not with the frequency of traffic tickets. Even some traffic tickets, especially those associated with traffic accidents, are not primarily about raising revenue.
