Although hunter-gathering is, of course, more intensely physical the depravations are also much more severe. Just the impact of ongoing adequate nutrition in childhood is a significant factor. One need do nothing more than look at parts of the world with inadequate nutrition to wonder about the validity of such sweeping statements.

If you can, upgrade to 16G and a 512 SSD. That will probably give you 7 years of service.
If you want a small footprint (but will always use a large monitor and full-size keyboard and mouse), I'd recommend going with a Brix Pro[^] instead of a laptop.

Having fixed the button on my left keypad button ultrabook a couple of weeks ago I can afford to wait for a little bit longer before committing. I had originally planned to get a Zenbook UX301, but the spec I wanted appeared to be vapourware and I lost interest in it.
Scott Hanselman mentioned the X1 in one of his presentations a couple of weeks ago and he appeared to be impressed with it.
