I, myself, am not sure, but myself am Merkan and it makes me laugh to hear someoneself refer to themselves as themselves. Usually a simple "me" or "us" would do, but I, myself, hypothesize that the uneducated think using a longer word makes themselves appear to be more sophisticated than themselves actually are.
I, myself, suspect that the custom of using a reflexive grammatical construct was imported from other languages where such constructs are normal.
