This true for all the cases where I've wanted to change the font on a particular control, but it does NOT work when you attempt it on a file dialog for some reason. I'm truly stumped. Thanks for your reply, though.

Created an application that uses SQL Server 7.0 to store data. I now want to place it on a clean machine for testing purposes, therefore SQL Server 7.0 will not be on this machine. I believe that what I need to install is MSDE to allow the application to interact with the database files.
Is this correct?
Where can I download MSDE from? Searches keep pointing me to MSDE for VC++ or Visual Studio, not exactly what I want.

MDAC - Microsoft Data Access Components
MSDE - Microsoft Data Engine
MDAC gives you ODBC and other database drivers while MSDE is more of an application to access the database files. I don't believe that the drivers provided by MDAC and ODBC alone can access an SQL Server database.
All of this could be completely wrong and am hoping someone with the correct information would give me a shove in the right direction as to what I need (if not MSDE) and where to get it.

My understanding given that I am learning ADO is that ADO can access an SQL Server database, and you need to install MDAC for the latest version of ADO. I'm not sure this is right, and if it is how if affects your situation. I'm using boring old Jet myself, until I figure out how to use ADOX to create a database file.

Utilising Dave Merner's SQLDirect (ODBC wrapper class I think) myself, as I have used it a couple of years ago and this is a side project that was not meant to take much time I stuck with what I knew instead of looking for the best option.
Will have to test this, maybe I don't need MSDE, ODBC DSN is used by SQLDirect so maybe MDAC is enough, will test over the weekend.

MSDE ist the SQL Server ENGINE for free distribution. With MDAC or ODBC you can't access the SQL Server database files directly, you always need an SQL Server engine. This can be the MSDE or the full product "SQL Server 7" / "SQL Server 2000". The engine runs as NT service on the database server.

I think that is exactly what you want. The CD comes with VStudio 6 or
you can download at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/msde/default.asp.
You will not get any of the tools, i.e. Query Analyser or Emterprise manager, just the DB engine.

What did you create your appliation with? If you did it with MS Office Developer edition or VS pro/enterprise ed. you can freely distribute MSDE (or MSDE 2000). Download MSDE from MS site at

(this is MSDE 1.0, I'm not sure about MSDE2000. But if you developed for SS 7.0 then MSDE 1.0 should do just fine. Be sure to apply the service packs (SQL Server 7.0 sps)

I have a simple SDI app with a Form view. I want the app to come up maximixed and stay that way. I changed the ShowWindow command to max the app on startup but whenever I open a document the window resizes to the size of the dialog box that defines the view.
How can I prevent this??

I think the default code shown commented out here might have something to do with it. If you add an OnInitialUpdate handler to your form view you can remove it like so:

MFC crys out for a registry class, but for some reason MS didn't include one.
I like the CRegistry class in Sam Blackburn's Windows Foundation Classes (not to be confused with other class libs that use the same name):

I ran into the problem today with win2k disabling the tcpip protocol if the machine is not on any network - thereby killing the localhost option (and more) and making some of my transfer testing a pain. I recently saw a coding fix for this and thought 'this I must remember' and promptly forgot it...
Can't seem to find it again - can any of you gent's refresh my memory?

Before I added any icons, the correct icon IDR_ABCTYPE was associated with all of my .abc files. I added another icon, and even though IDR_ABCTYPE is still exactly the same, all my .abc files are now being shown with this new icon, which should have nothing to do with them. any ideas what I've messed up??

I think there are several ways of fixing this, not sure that will do the trick for you but here they are;
1) Fire up your registry editor and go to;
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.abc\
Check the '(default)' string entry, if its empty go to the sub-key 'DefaultIcon' and set the correct number. If it has a string in it, find the key it refers to ( from the '(default)' entry );
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\*the key*\
And do the same as above.
BTW: this is only a temporary fix, you should use one of the others to make sure it will work properly on other PC's.
2) Pass '/Unregister' as a command line option to your application (if your using MFC) then re-run it to correct the associations.
3) In VC++ open up your executable as a resource file, check that the new icon you added is at the end of the icon resource list. If it is not, then you will need to play around with the resouce.h file and make the icon's ID larger than that of the document's.
One of these should do the trick, but no promises.

I think it must have something to do with the IDs of the icons, because I played around with them and was able to produce different incorrect results After enough frustration I deleted the icons and made bitmaps to display on my buttons instead, so that's working now and the icons are back to normal  Thanks for all of your help!

Something I've found over time is that Explorer keeps an icon cache which can get a bit corrupted. You might try "Rebuild Icons" in TweakUI to fix this (if that is what the problem is); also it might be called "Repair Icons" or something - can't quite remember just off hand.

Have you problems with any other icons? I've had similar problems just using my system where icon associations kept changing to different icons...
Otherwise if its just the ABC files that your having trouble with, sorry cant help...
