My daughter lives very close to this, which sort of makes it personal.

When I say dir *.xls I do not want to see xlsx files! If I wanted to see xlsx files I would have friggin' asked to see them! Dagnabit!

Workaround, courtesy of Gary Wheeler, remove (existing) short names in the directory:

fsutil 8dot3name strip .

And, optionally, disable future automatic short name creation:

fsutil 8dot3name set f: 1

That will filter out other things I want to see. The following is better, but still not fool-proof and I don't want to have to do that.

Powershell appears to work better with a simple ls *.xls -s

I don't use Powershell, but I fear that means they won't fix DIR. Sigh | :sigh:

It even does the same for this:

dir *.xl?

But gives "file not found" for this:

dir *.xl

Bad command or file name. Bad, bad command! Sit! Stay! Staaaay...

I know, right? It violates decades of history and commonality with other (better) Operating Systems. Sigh | :sigh:

That actually makes sense. In MS land ? represents any single character. It's not a wildcard that can mean zero or more like *.
