I've got a Samsung Galaxy S4 with service from Verizon. The phone has recently developed a new trick - when it rings and I don't catch it in time, it switches to vibrate mode all by itself. And if I make an outgoing call, as soon as I hang up, it switches to vibrate mode, again without ever being asked to do so. This ain't right, but who do I holler at?

Samsung! Me and the Missus have new S5's and the kids now have our S4's. All have been upgraded to Android 4.4.2 and they all do this. Happens to me when I touch the phone.
Found that I can't change the volume of the ring using the volume button while it is ringing like I used too. I had to go into Settings -> Sound -> Ring Tone (?) and there changed volume.
Not happy with some of the changes and more so with a couple of changes Samsung Australia have made in the few months before I got the phone.

That's exactly it, Mick. Version 4.4.2 and I get the same crap when I try to change volume, too. This behavior just started a few days ago, after the last updates. Grrrr....

I don't think it's Verizon's fault. Bitch at Samsung. I have an S4 with Verizon service and I don't experience that. Perhaps you've installed an app that is messing with the setting or you've a virus. Gotta stay away from those pr0n sites ya know.

I'm sure that makes sense somehow, but I can't see why you should tell someone to bitch at a company for a problem that doesn't exist on your device.
As the ringer mechanism is integral to the OS (for pretty obvious reasons, on a phone) the OS is obviously at fault, here. Is everyone afraid to say J'accuse at google?

What have they got to do with the system volume control, that is used for the ringer?
I have four android devices; two made by Samsung. Samsung bloatware has bugger all to do with the volume control.
The behaviour of another person on this thread has already pissed me off with it. Don't add to that.

The OP mentioned the volume being muted and set to vibrate after/while making or receiving a phone call.
I don't know what I've done to upset you, but Touchwiz does affect the volume control, believe it or not. But whatever. Touchwiz is more pervasive that it may seem.
These behaviours have not been exhibited by other android devices.

If you look in the android help forums, rather than in a help forum for Windows developers, you'll see that similar behaviour has been reported for numerous devices.
It's only Windows developers here who have said that it only affects one device -- the same Windows developers who said that anyone who uses a help forum is an idiot who should not allowed to use a phone (unless it's CP, of course. Help forums that are used by people with such arrogance are obviously useful, and you're not an idiot if you use one of them; only if you use on that they don't use).

Hmm, I get your point and no, I don't support such arrogance. Sorry if I gave that impression. I was just stating what is an apparently uninformed opinion on which party should be responsible. 
Certainly get the point you were making with the other poster about the help forums and completely agree it is arrogant and frankly unhelpful.

First smart phone? Just joking.
Anyhow, go to your settings. Some aspects of the phone are Samsung and some are Verizon. For instance, I have a Note 4. I can either use the messaging service via Samsung or Verizon, but not both. I tell the phone this in the settings section.
If this is your first real smart phone, then it can take some getting used to. It can be frustrating at first. With all this said, I love my phone; and it took a while to get used to.
