Oh it's not you. I'm a native english speaker of sorts (New Zealand) and the first (and only) time I was there I couldn't understand a freakin' word either

Well a couple of weeks watching shows like Blackpool and Broadchurch made me understand at least 1 word in 5 of Scottiss... but when a customer from Manchester came here I thought the entire time he was German (I didn't know who he was, that's how communication works in my company). Didn't understand a single syllabe.

I've been in Scotland several times. Just once I've had serious troubles to understand, the guy was a taxi driver in Glasgow.
