How many times has Microsoft "innovated" too early.
The one that gets me the most is single-sign-on. Everyone signs on with Google or Facebook these days, but who remembers .NET Passport?
Apple Pencil. Jobs would be spinning in his grave.

Err me. I also remember what a complete PITA it was to set up and work with. Okay, the PassportProvider was simple enough to use in ASP.NET apps. but the rest of it was a complete nightmare.

I was thinking more along the "OMG MS is gonna OWN me!" rants, and the legal challenges, and the FUD, and all the running around like headless chickens.
Until we all realised that single-sign-on is really, really convenient.

Yup. Until a few years ago, my standard rejoinder to anyone who was arguing OAuth/OpenID were better than passwords was to take a look at how their Mom would react if she tried to create a Stack Overflow account. Initially it was an unholy cluster elephant involving a popup window and copy/pasting a magic URL around.   (I picked on SO mostly because at the time it was probably the best known user of the tech among developer sites, and has a user experience so awful it'd scare 90% of mundanes away before they had created their account).
Yeah the tech Just Works (tm) now; but the interval from the initial hype to that point was many years long.

Language popularity indices are often based on books purchased or StackOverflow questions. However educational institutions have institutionalized teaching languages such as Java, C, C++ and RDBMSs such as MySQL originally because they where free open-source, not owned by a specific company and were popular a decade ago.
As a result these indices do not reflect usage of languages or technologies used professionally (as opposed to used for learning - all the students buy the books and ask questions online for the language in their course).
Now that ORACLE owns Java and MySQL will this change? It doesn't seem to have yet. C# in particular I suspect is much more popular in the work place than indices show - because academic institutions had an aversion to teaching a "Microsoft" language.
I am speaking in general of course - though I am yet to see even today a Computer Science student who used C# in one of their courses.

I enjoyed reading your opinions, but, without citing sources (recent sources with some scientific credibility), your arguments and hypotheses, while possible, do not convince me they are more highly probable than the "usual suspects."
Did you read the other article cited on this forum (on InfoWorld) ? If you did, it appears their methodology of looking at activity on major search engines did not register on you, since you do not mention that in your "indictment" of other studies.
"Tiobe assesses language popularity via a formula that analyzes searches in popular search sites, such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and Wikipedia. The improved algorithm addresses the number of outliers -- "statistical noise" -- per search engine, Tiobe said in its monthly report for September."
Did you think of doing a simple Google search on "C# use in academic:" if you do, you will find evidence for C# being used in universities/colleges, like Cornell, and others.
Your post seems to me more appropriate for the Lounge ... that's not a "put-down" !

IPFS is actually more similar to a single bittorrent swarm exchanging git objects. IPFS could become a new major subsystem of the internet. If built right, it could complement or replace HTTP.

This article seems to be more hype than well researched computer science. Many of the criticisms of HTTP are not related to HTTP at all. If a company goes out of business and their web site gets shut down leaving a link to a dead site, how is that an issue with HTTP?
