For the longest time I've wanted to develop a couple of apps for market. I've started working on one, but it's slow and time consuming. I know if I could finish them that I could make money.
The biggest constraints are my job and family. I'm out of the house at work for 10 hours a day, then home to the family and all home stuff etc. That leaves little time for personal coding.
This morning on the way in I was listening to NPR and they were profiling a company that used crowd funding to launch a new product, rather than more traditional sources such as loans and investors.
So, do you think crowd funding would be a viable option to replace income long enough to develop and market an app? Off the top of my head without running any numbers, with all expenses and taxes, I'm thinking $200 - $250k for 1 to 1.5 years.
Anyone have any experience with crowd funding that you can share?

There are a lot of webistes for that, maybe you check out those and evaluate if it would work out for you. Some projects there are going to raise way more $$$ than they need others don't even hit the 50$ mark.
It depends on the product, the expected outcome and how popular this might get/be at the end. Also, crowdfnding often works with special offers like meet the devs or get 10 editions instead of one. These offers are staged in different "pay amount options" like 5$ and you get the app, 20$ and you'll get 4 codes for friends, 100$ meet & greet, 500$, Meet & Greet with champagne and a note in the credits.
It really depends on what you are working at and what people would grant you as starting money. So first of all look at the different websites like "Kickstarter" and then evaluate how popular your product might be and how "fast" you could reach your goal of 200k$.
