Then they allow macros to run in these attachments to e-mails from unknown sources...

They must have gotten the memos, but for reasons unknown they did not listen! Maybe they were curious to see if the threat was real - who knows. You will always have at least one sunshine who just won't listen.

I do not agree with the line "If none of us paid the ransom, these guys would go out of business."
These people are mostly in third world countries and have nothing, including a business, to begin with. If this "opportunity" dries up, they will just switch to another crime.

Not at all, I didn't suggest anything, except that the statement quoted was false.
The solution is to block all those countries from the internet. That would effectively end the telemarketing plague at the same time, because all the telemarketing calls are over voip, with spoofed phone numbers from Pakistan, India, Nigeria, etc.
In my home network I have country blocking at the firewall level. But we need to do this as a nation, not on the individual level.
Cut them OFF TOTALLY. Maybe that will get their attention.

This may be difficult to implement, considering the fact that vast numbers of American companies use people in India and Pakistan to man their tech support lines!

I have also seen much of the world because of my job, before I retired. It was very interesting. I really enjoyed Switzerland. My wife and I spent a week in Grindelwald on holiday. It was most memorable! What a beautiful town.
