In the case of people like Marc, Griff, and JSOP (and others -- you're not unnoticed, but I'm a lazy typist), you publish articles that help others, and help others fix problems that they've been struggling with.
The only exclusive cliques I've seen in CP are based on religion, which -- although intolerable --is the same everywhere, and is best ignored.
Don't knock guys who are doing so much to actually help their fellow devs.

Back in my student days...(typing that still feels odd) I registered on a Job site called www.job.ac.uk, I have just come across a 'new' one called www.jobs.co.uk... are they the related?

I had a look and www.jobs.co.uk[^] doesn't really look like it's particularly suitable for IT skilled people.
I mention this because the site I have used accepts your CV as a word document and it seems to work quite well.
Having to individually specify every skill and technology just feels like a bit too much, when parsing a CV that is uploaded might be better for many IT job searchers.
That's just my two-penneth.
