Me and my GF love Star Wars, Star Trek and Doctor Who - we are not hardcore enough for anyone of them it seems. Except for the guys at Forbidden Planet, they kind of like us and I still don't know why

I'm hardcore enough to own every season box set of TOS, TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT, and every movie. Paramount stopped getting my money starting with the reboots however.
The Kelvin timeline movies (aka "JJ-Trek" aka "Nu-Trek") are just mindless action movies like Transformers that end up in the bargain bin 3 months after release. If that.

It's not a religion, but Star Trek still had a message. These movies, in comparison, are just entertainment, as you put it. You can't recognize this is something that's been lost?
If JJ-Trek had been made in 1966, we wouldn't still be talking about it 50 years later.

Watch the interview with Nichelle Nichols where she discusses her meeting with Martin Luther King, when he told her what she was doing was too important for her to quit her role. Watch the interview with Jimmy Doohan where he mentions talking to a suicidal kid who later became an engineer because of him. Watch any of the rest of the cast who have been told by actual NASA scientists, engineers and astronauts they took these jobs because of what they saw on Star Trek.
Then tell me again you're okay with Star Trek being watered down mindless entertainment nowadays.

Yes ST had a message. People being influenced to make something of themselves and become scientists, engineers, etc is not unique to Star Trek. Many scifi shows and movies (and yes even Star Wars) have had that effect. Many shows and movies of other genres have also had similar effects, albeit not necessarily of becoming scientists, but something else grand.
Am I ok with "watering down" ST (as you put it)? Sure, why not? It doesn't belong to me. It's someone else's "art". I can like it for what it is and think that other takes on Star Trek were and are better. And some not even as good. Just like a lot of the individual episodes in TOS, TNG, DS9, STE, STV were more or less "better". Some where awesome episodes, some stank to low hell. Same goes with the ST movies. Some were awesome, some were so-so, some stank to low hell. And of course, to each his/her own opinion.
Someone once said "one man's trash is another man's treasure". Same goes for movies and serials.

Star Trek had more than its fair share of bad/terrible episodes and movies and I'll be the first to admit it wouldn't be hard to argue there's more bad than good.
All I'm saying is that I see no redeemable value in any of the JJ-Trek movies, and the producers themselves are on the record for saying claiming there's no market anymore for the "traditional" Trek stories. I disagree strongly with that, and if that's where the franchise is headed, I want nothing to do with it. This is why I'm voting with my wallet.

To be fair, they're entertaining and look better than Trek's ever looked before. That's the value I see in them. But that's ultimately not enough to make me want to see them more than once.

I can agree to that. In Paramount's infinite wisdom, by allowing these alternate timeline movies, they in fact had to change canon to accommodate them and destroy Romulus in the primary timeline. Way to go  Blow up Romulus just as Picard helped to bring the Federation and the Romulan Star Empire closer to peace in Nemesis. It's like they are trying to destroy Star Trek just like they did with Star Wars VI by just remaking episode 4 in a bid for a nostalgia dollars.
And yes, The Force Awakens was a rehash of A New Hope

I would favor a return to the Next Generation era. Perhaps a plot involving "Admiral Picard" sending Captains Worf and Riker off on some perilous mission. Or, revisiting Deep Space 9 (my fav ST series) with some new creepy aliens coming through the wormhole. Let the 23rd century rest.

I kind of enjoyed it. It is not that Star Trek - it is more Star Trek anyway. I won't buy the discs but for a lazy evening at the cinema with my Trekkie girlfriend and my friends it's worth its money... provided it is a cheap cinema (I paid 10.80€ for two tickets so it counts).

I have to rant about this: (If you don't like rants move along...)
How in the world can a space ship withstand hitting rocks, mountains and trees and come to rest with hardly a dent. But an alien ship can just fly right through the shell without meeting any resistance? In the prior movie, it was knocking over buildings. Why can't they build the buildings out of the same stuff they make space ships out of?

Italian already got there with a couple of mashups with famous Italian songs like "Acqua e Sale" (Celentano - Mina) and "Trottolino Amoroso" (Minghi - Mietta).
