Went well, if you exclude a power fail during the "do not turn off your PC" phase.
Which may possibly have been Microsoft's fault if their Demonic Influence spreads to the weather (which would explain a lot). But I doubt that, and wish I'd got the UPS working, but since the couriers dropped it, it had to go back.
I was worried: I'd heard the stories of all-day-installation, bricking if you have multiple disks (I do, SDD and HDD), general dislike of drivers. And to have the power go out during the update itself? I was not filled with optimism.
But ... turn the PC on, and it automatically unwinds back to a working (pre AE) system.
Start the update again, and two hours later if finished and working in AE.
The start menu has changed - not too much, but I deleted all the Fisher Price tiles in the original anyway. And the stupid "Notifications" icon is permanently there instead of when there is new stuff - which is a little annoying, since it moves the time over about 1.5cm to the left, so I don't "see" it immediately.
Cortana still can't understand a word I say. Probably a good thing, given the profanity level that it defaulting to Edge despite being told that chrome is my default browser induces.
Other than that? Nothing bad has happened. Mind you, I don't see anything good either, but time will tell.

I'm going to have to break down and buy a prebuilt win 10 system just so i can run it into the ground trying different tweaks.then start over again.

I was quite pleased with the AE upgrade, no disaster, no observable change good or bad.

Win 7 --> Win 10 upgrade really broke the missus's and mine laptops. Mine was pretty old, hers about two years. In both cases it didn't have the alcatec network drivers, nor were they available for download. No real warning about the upgrade - shut it down at night, broken OS in the mroning. In the end it was a case of flatten the machine and re-install total PITA. I managed to opt mine out out of Windows 10. Didn't bother with herself's laptop as the re-installation happened after the free upgrade deadline. Weirdly, it upgraded itself again (once more without warning) but the networking seems to be OK this time.
Don't know how MS has gotten away with this stunt at all. Seriously considering becoming a Linux-only household.

I've tried installing it 5 times.
Each time it's taken over an hour, then rolled everything back when (I assume) it's near then end.
No explanation, no support link, nothing.
So if I can't get this update, how do I get future ones?

So 5 times I've tried to install this 'upgrade'.
5 times it's taken over an hour, then failed and rolled everything back.
No explanation, no support link, just 'We couldn't do it'.
Thanks Microsoft. If you can't deploy updates to my machine, where does that leave me?

GUYS! ONLY INSTALL WINDOWS UPDATES DURING THUNDERSTORMS AND WITH NO UPS!
We'll have to make sure that ms documents the process -- including that you have to pull the plug manually if there isn't an actual power outage.

Ah! So AE was the proverbial thorn in my side a couple weeks ago...
Was traveling on my way back from three weeks in Australia and needed to pay a bill when I got back (stupid T-Mobile and their payment site isn't usable on mobile...) Only needed my laptop for 5 minutes, and the stupid thing sits there updating for over an hour... Had to shut the thing and board my next flight, hoping it completed before the battery ran out (which it did, thankfully...)
What really annoyed me was that there was no warning that the update would take longer than usual. When I selected 'Shut down and apply updates' it installed a few things for a few minutes and switched off, with no warning that on next boot my laptop would be completely unusable for over an hour...
That is bad User Experience...
And yes, that persistent Notifications icon can go elephant itself, as well as the person who thought it was a good idea...

Your comment about the notifications icon made me look, and it seems one can turn it off:
rt-click taskbar > settings > turn system icons on/off > Action Centre
Don't know if the setting will stick...

But does it reappear when there are notifications?  (or possibly  Win 10 does seem to encourage one or the other...)
