I'd like to know what the basic purpose behind using WPF would be. What is the difference between a normal non-WPF application and a WPF application? Please share some links to get me started with WPF.

Well, for one thing, Microsoft does not plan to add any new features to WinForms after Winforms 2.1. So, if you are building a new application, you might as well move to what they are going to support in the future.

You will, of course. get a number of links (if you search on the internet) on the advantages/features WPF has to offer.
