I don't know better tutorial then the first reference (overview) and the CodeProject article referenced. I successfully used hooks long time ago and never used anything but Windows API documentation...
Using hooks in not the easiest topic, needs very careful work to capture the events you need and avoid messing up your system at the same time. I mean, I will anyway take much more time than finding proper parts of API and MDSN help pages.

A hook is typically used to intercept data from some element in the system. For example I have used a keyboard hook to prevent key presses of the 'windows key' being forwarded to the OS which would open the start menu.
