From long time I have a question, how open source people earn money.

Advertisement, micro-transactions, sponsors, gifts...
And by the way, OpenGL[^] has nothing to do with open source Smile | :)

Not everyone does everything for money, some people just do things out of goodness.

Agree, I know some of them.

Sweet and naïve... In the Netherlands we have a saying "The sun rises for nothing", meaning that everything else is never free. I had expected better from you Dave ;p
Seriously, it's true that some people just like what they do and selflessly share it with others (well, there is still the reward of all the people using and liking your work, or the warm fuzzy feeling you get inside) ;)
Nice addition though. 5 :)

When the human genome project was running, there were teams publishing all they could so that it was in public domain and couldn't be patented.
Some people do stuff just to annoy others :)

If their would be no Concept of Donating for good cause in the World, then probably their would have been no "Wikipedia" available for Information.
Wikipedia Donation

Same concept applies to "Open Source" Technologies. Many people around the Globe invest their Time, Effort and Money for this.

Solution 1

Open source does not always mean free of cost. It's free as in freedom not as in beer. You could also give the product for free and charge for training, consulting, custom additions, maintenance etc.

They work for good Karma. Or God helps some of them right now for their good behavior Smile | :) .
Try to contribute by yourself and you will feel it.

P.S.: By the way, I think this is off-topic question.
