How do featured articles that one can view on the very top of the home page of the CodeProject.com are selected?

Occasionally I see articles there that didn't get many stars, or didn't get much discussion. What makes an article that special that it gets to be selected as featured? Is it done automatically by the system or is it picked by staff?

I think, "featured" means manually selected :)

It's automatic - and AFAIK it's pretty random, as you can check by using F5 to reload the page!

Yes, the display is automatic. But I'm thinking of a "featured article pool", the a staff would manually picks up some articles as featured, then they will be displayed randomly each time we open?

Do you have any idea how many articles there are? Over 600,000 AFAIK (judging by the article ID in links) So how would the staff (who are very good at what they do, but not necessarily experts in the same fields as the articles) pick the list of "featured articles"? Best way might be to use the highest scoring articles - but that means the list takes a very long time to change (as would any system involving people picking them).

At least with the current random picks, it presents articles you would never go looking for - and I've found some interesting ideas that way!
