How can you compute L1 norm of the filter coefficent in Matlab

Hello
I am a absolute beginner who is making her way around Matlab and signal processing.
Chosen word length for MAC unit I/O is 12 bits. The incoming signal from
the A/D converter is in the format s12:11. What is the maximum fraction length
for the output of the MAC unit (that is, what is n in the format 12:n) which does
not cause any overflows?
Can anyone tell me the process to compyte it on The Matlab i mean commands etc.
