C and Assembler are generally the optimal languages. However, some systems have hardware that is designed for a specific language, so you have no choice but to use the one that is specified. Some languages are easy to integrate because they share a common object code format (C, C++, ASM), while others are more difficult to integrate, C#, VB.NET, Java etc.
