Excel is a program, part of the Office suite. If you have a bunch of files in the Excel format that you want to import, it would make a ton more sense to read them in your code, than to ask SQL Server to parse them. Then you can build a bulk insert and make your insert of data as efficient as possible.

SS2005 is the stone ages, if you can upgrade, you'll find your life is a whole lot easier.
