What doctype can be added to the "tree with layout" code and still have the nodes work with canvas?

In the "tree with layout" code, IE is running fine using VML, but if I add a doctype (I've tried several different ones) the non-IE (canvas) browsers no longer work. The nodes are all rendered on top of each other in the top/left. Is there a doctype that works or is there some other modification that needs to be made to make one work?

I am using the Graphic Javascript Tree with Layout code on this codeproject site. It was posted by Emilio CL in 2006.
