how to detect new chat message(php)

hi 2all

i have developed chat system that all user of the system chat with it (broadcast)
for example user 1 and user 2 and user 3 and user 4 chat at that chat box

if user 1 is offline and the chat box have new message how to notify user 1 that there is new messages in that chat from last-time he seen the chat ??

what database structure ??

i need logic of it
