What are the different methods to implement access control in card readers?

There is a card reader outside a lecture hall. I want to permit students of specific courses to enter the lecture hall at a particular timing. What are the different methods to do such implementation. I have searched and got to know that it can be implemented through access control list. Is there any other method. I just want to know the names of the methods. Do I require to know about compiler design for this.

1) We do not do your homework: it is set for a reason. It is there so that you think about what you have been told, and try to understand it. It is also there so that your tutor can identify areas where you are weak, and focus more attention on remedial action.

Try it yourself, you may find it is not as difficult as you think!
