How to recognize the characters even with the curve part

Hi..

I have an image.. like a coin shaped image.
Inside the image contains characters following the curve part.
My problem is how to be able to recognize the characters especially those at the curve part..

My ideas are:
1. To straighten the curve part.. but i don't know how.
2. To extract each characters.. but i still don't know how.

can anyone help me...

Just a note: this is extremely difficult problem. No wonder it's used in CAPTCHA.
By can you do OCR even for straight characters? :-)

yes.. i have downloaded an open source OCR.. it can read straight characters..
my primary problem is how to align all the characters.. :(
