It is? Have not watched the Blues Brothers (was before my time and seeing the trailer for Blues Brothers 2000 really put me off seeing the original BB) so I could not tell.

Be realistic. You can play with whatever you want at home (if you are not married), but at work, most of us do not have a choice. If the boss says "use VC 6.0 only", then we have 2 options.
1. Quit.
2. Use VC 6.0 only
Now, it would be an interesting poll, but I guess at least 80% would pick the second option.

There's nothing stopping anyone from reading up on new technologies, downloading the SDK's and spending an hour every couple of days playing with samples and stuff (unless it's the .NET SDK and you're on a phone line).
The question is more about what you do in your own time, not your boss's time.

Depends.. If I say "it takes me 6 month longer than erwriting the whole mess in Fortran".... Only I then have to *do* it.

What are you saying ? Are you married ?
While this is true, surely we play with new things on our own time anyhow ? I know I had to learn GDI+ on my own time before I made a case to my boss for it ( actually I showed him our app ported to it, and all the extra stuff it did ). I learned ATL in my own time, which got me my new job. If we don't learn things in our own time that are not part of our job, then the subset of programming we do now stands a good chance of being all we will ever do, IMO.

I am married, but that was a joke. Of course you must spend a lot of the "free" time learning, if you want to stay in this profession. I learned VB, assembler, C# and even STL on my own time. But to become a real expert in something, I guess you need to use it professionaly. And if your company does not want you to work on that "something", then IMHO you will either spend too much of your own time playing with it (the time you could use to learn something else), or never become an expert.
I've played a lot with C# last year. But I am not a C# expert. Not until I earn some money with it.

I presumed so, when you said

I guessed this meant there are things you'd like to play with at home but are not allowed to
Nemanja Trifunovic wrote:

I am learning C# on my own time, I certainly learned STL at home. I spent the next month at work on other peoples PC's and showing them how to use it. We are fully STL at viewbuild now. I smack anyone who tries to use anything else

I guess it depends on how much time you get to play with it, and how. I create a project for the purpose of learning something, so I have both a goal, and a reason to press on with every detail of a project using something new, and I'd spend about 30 hours a week working on my own code.

Part of a programmer's job is to advise his/her usually not as technically minded boss on what tools to use for a project, i.e. VC 6.0 vs .net vs VB, etc.. If you are in a job where your opinions mean nothing to your boss, I suggest you change jobs...

Has anyone read the text answers ? Try this:
Q: Are you a developer who likes to dive into the latest technologies, or do you prefer to stick with what you know?
A: Image Processing
or
A: if changes made in ASP automatic changes have to be done in Dynamic page
I'll admit the first one could mean 'stick with what I know, which is image processing' ( Chris Losinger ? It wasn't me, that's for sure ), but how does the second response constitute an answer to the question ? Did I miss something ?

Everytime I allow free text answers we get 'search' type responses.
Does it look like a search box? Is there something I'm missing here?

uhmmm, for me that edit box looks just like any other edit box used for search. But I am not 100% sure because I'm using that wonderful CP bar plugin to search on CodeProject. So I just cant get confused with all that input stuff and UI widgets.

I guess. I'm a little disappointed, it's not like anything like the majority felt that way. I thought the poll a little repetitive, I admit, but not enough to whine about it, and like a petulant child, giving such professional whingers what they want only makes them worse.
