I think so. Should coders be more concerned about 'Pepole' and be a more effective communicator? I think that will help perfect personal attributes and make life more colourful.

In my previous company, this is the B-boy/girl that had to bring the cakes and drinks! But even then, it was still a nice tradition
Of course, some never did! 
Now, there are social events organised, but it has nothing to do with team bonding, no one is "forced" to go and some never do. And it is not funded only by the company, but also by people putting a little bit of money every month.
