Don't listen to those others, they are developers and most of us have a low opinion of PMs. IMHO a good PM should also have been a BA on the way, I also think a good developer should be able to do the work of a BA so make sure you have those analysis and design skills.
PM is paperwork, meetings, organising the business and cajoling bastard programmers into doing their job and then more meetings. If you have a taste for that then go for it. If you desire to make a career through management then it is probably a good step. Personally I dislike the idea of a frontal lobotomy and paperwork is something I avoid like the plague.

My current PM is an ex coder then a top notch BA and now moved into PM, bloody hopeless at looking after the people part but does an excellent job getting the work done. I've had 2 top quality BA/PM over the last 9 years with this company and count my blessings for them.

I've recently moved into a more supervisory/managementy role; setting tasks for people, checking progress, keeping the customer happy, getting more involved with planning with PM etc
And, to tell you the truth, I'm bored out of my mind - and that's not to say that I've got no work to do; sometimes I barely have time to take a dump; it's the nature of the job that bores me.
If you love problem solving, coding, developing, testing - then the PM route may leave you unfulfilled - it is just politics, meetings, emails, paperwork, keeping angry customers happy, cajoling engineers to do things they may not necessarily want to do (and neither do you but you have no choice) etc
Also, I wouldn't agree that a good programmer makes a good PM - to me they are different roles entirely, utilising different skill sets.
I've worked with only a handful of, what I would call, outstanding PM's.
As a PM, you have to take a step back from the Engineering side of things and let your engineers do that job, your role is to manage the job, keep to the budget, bring it in on time and deal with the all the internal/external politics.
It's not my idea of a fun job, I'll be going back to what I enjoy for the next role - but like they say it's whatever floats your boat.
