Just upgraded a personal laptop from W7 to W10. Upgrade went smooth, booted up. But the video and sound drivers are off  No sound over HDMI, no video-duplication on HDMI, resolution looks crap, etc. It's a Dell XPS 17 so I am sure it uses popular and very standard video/sound chips. Oh well, I'll have to experiment with various beta drivers and hope it works.

Did you try Dell's website? There you can detect your computer's model and OS and get adequate drivers for them.
You always obtain more by being rather polite and armed than polite only.

You can also try to select the device in the Device Manager, and instruct Windows to look for the latest driver for the device on the Internet. I did that on both my Dell XPS desktop and Dell Inspiron laptop and for me it worked 100% Good Luck!

As a matter of fact: I recommend that you have Windows check on the 'net for every device that it has the latest driver. It may take a few minutes, but can be well worth it. Also: Once you have the upgrade running, and you confirmed that it is activated, consider doing a "clean" install of Win 10. I normally format the systems drive for the clean install, but this may be unnecessary. You can get ISO files for the Windows 10 installation disc on the 'net. Just make sure you get the file for the right version (32 or 64 bits, Home or Pro).
If you install the latest Windows 10 build (number 10586), you will be spared a lengthy upgrade to this build later on.

Did a fresh install from scratch - video and sound work now. Video over HDMI is still a problem - it can extend, but cannot duplicate. I see tons of others with the exact same problem on W10 and none of them had a resolution

In my desktop I have a GTX 745 adapter from NVidea. It has a VGA, a DVI and a HDMI output. Maybe I was lucky: Because I did not have HDMI cables, I connected my main monitor to the DVI output and the second monitor to the VGA output. Maybe I will have the same issue if I use the HDMI output? Who knows? However, the current setup works just fine. But I only run the monitors extended. Have not tried to duplicate them.
Did you update the video adapter to the latest driver?
Update: I tried to duplicate the monitors and it works fine. Do you have DVI and VGA outputs? You may be forced to go with those outputs until Microsoft or NVidea sort the issue out.

Laptop only has HDMI. It's a known issue with NVidea cards with Optimus. The laptop display is on the Intel card and the HDMI uses NVidea. So duplicate won't work as neither card can see each other's monitors for the duplicate-scenario. Extend works as it always has. Freaking pain really. Specially if you want to do a presentation. You'd have to look at the projector to move the mouse!

Did duplicate displays worked before Windows 10? Sounds to me that you may be stuck with a hardware issue that will be difficult, if not impossible to solve?

Yeah, duplicate displays worked perfectly fine in Windows 7. It's not a hardware issue.
This is acknowledged in the Nvidea forums - multiple threads.

Then it most probably is the Windows 10 display driver. I regret but I cannot think of a solution for you, other than living with it or going back to 7 until the driver issue is sorted out. I would also report the issue to NVidea and the laptop manufacturer, if they are not already aware of it.

I have the same (Dell XPS 17) and I had no issues with the video and sound.
For the audio of HDMI, make sure you update your NVidia drivers as well, in case there were some issues with an older driver.

With my XPS the NVidea drivers that Windows 10 installed, seemed to work great, but when I checked for the latest driver, it turned out that Win 10 installed an older driver. But this is easily fixed! Just tell the OS to install the latest driver. There is really no need to go and drill for a driver on the Dell website.

Mine's 3 years old though, so specs may be older than yours.
The Nvidia drivers are installing but not sure if it got stuck or if it actually takes hours.

About the same age as mine. Came with Win 7 Home, and since then have upgraded to Win 7 Pro, Win 8 Ent, Win 8.1 Ent, and now Win 10 Ent.
Audio:

I have no idea when this disappeared (the duplicate screens option), but that is no longer available as an option that I can see on my machine. I know it was there and working when I had Win 8.x, but MS seems to have removed that option.

And yeah, duplicate works in 7 and 8.1 - won't work on 10. They must have changed how two cards interact together.
