I'm trying to move a database between servers and I'm getting an error message which is evidently well-known and which has a lengthy and annoying workaround provided by Microsoft. I really just want to get this done so I can move on, except the "Restart your computer to complete the updates" dialog pops up.
I tell it to go away until later, but then it pops back up and starts counting down from 15 mins. I tell it to go away. 15 mins later the machine reboots right in the middle of a database restore.
I understand machines should be patched. I understand users (me) get lazy and wait until we have a round toit before we restart. But to not offer the "I really, really need you to not restart right now" option is inexcusable. Actually it's just unfriendly and stupid.
Back to square one, probably with the added bonus of untangling the mess of a semi-restore.

That is the one thing that has always annoyed me most about MS updates: the forced reboot when it decides it wants it, regardless of what effect it will have on the user. Fortunately, I haven't seen it for a couple of years now - but if they are bringing it back I could finally be tempted by linux...if VS worked on it!

Not sure about that one - it's not high on my list of things to look at - and I'd still need Win10 for testing and maintenance of existing stuff. But maybe a dual boot with Remix could give me the best of both worlds? Have to think about that one as well, I've plenty of unassigned SSD and HDD I could use...

It's not worth it. It would take at least 5 years before it can be used in production.

I am in the process of moving the household - 3 laptops and 1 desktop to Ubuntu (1 with Lubuntu). With one machine left to go (i7 laptop running Win10) I have had to look at this. The solution seems to be running Win7 in Virtualbox and installing vs. Was about to test this on another machine but other things have intervened. I'm hoping it will work as well as everything else so far.

I'm over 8 years now with Fedora, using VM to run Visual Studio on Windows...Now I;m venturing to VS Code...

Tried, had issues with the touch support. Didn't like it.
Did you try elementary os[^]? It has a good design (nonetheless I don't like Mac). Not that, then what about Chrome OS[^]?

Windows doesn't care, what you were doing, what you are doing, and what you will be doing.
Same thing happened to me today, I was going to clean install Windows 10 Anniversary update and, well, I had to go through the restart processes and everything before I can do anything at all, like start anything.
There is one way, you can defer updates. But that doesn't guarantee you can get around the error. What I believe should be done is that the setting must be applied system-wide to schedule the restart and until then Windows must leave us alone and not try to install the updates until that date. You're not alone, I do that too, too often, even I keep my laptop up and running for months and put it to hibernation if I have to, I don't restart or shut down the system for months or even more just because of this annoying feature. Makes me really like and appreciate Linux systems; Ubuntu.

Also that message "Don't turn off your computer." it's kind of annoying.
I think in Windows 7 it used to be "Please don't turn off your computer", slightly less condescending.
But nevertheless, it feels like I'm stuck in the sewers and waiting for someone to flush their toilet...

Windows 10 has a good market share by now (more than 300 million devices), that is why they dropped the length of string a bit.

Understand... at hours, patches pushed out Tuesday morning.
After patches installed, system starts a 4 hour countdown and then it WILL restart.
Plan accordingly...

We had to reboot a database server at work this week for a powershell update, and no I am not making this up.

Get with the times, Chris! Put it in the Cloud, then you don't have to worry about no stinking updates!!! And it will 'Just Work!"

You may cancel a reboot with
shutdown -a
and disable Windows Update messings with
net stop wuauserv
These commands should allow you to do whatever lengthy operation without being annoyed.
You always obtain more by being rather polite and armed than polite only.

So the big question is
1. Why don't they have a tiny "PLEASE NOT NOW!" button on the dialog saying you're doomed
2. Why don't they have something as simple as a check on user mouse or keyboard activity. If I'm furiously typing away then it's safe to say I'm busy. If I've been warned and it has a little pulsating skull and cross bones in the bottom right of the screen saying "we'll reboot as soon as you're gone" then I can finish work, save it, then leave it to go ahead and do its diabolical work.
Either are simple and user friendly.

As long as we're ranting, last night the only options when I went to shut down a W10 box were: Install Updates and Restart or Install Updates and Shutdown. Not a problem then; but those're exactly the worst two options to have to choose between when the power is out and the UPS is counting down to a hard crash.

My current contract is coming to an end and I'm trolling for work again.
Every time I go through this I typically see more web based work than anything else, and being a purely Windows guy I have always felt a sense of dread when trying to considering learning web development. My idea of web development is something like this[^].
It seem like there are WAY too many technologies to learn to truly be effective, yet if I want to stay employed it seems that I've got no real choice.
Can you guys definethe stack that I REALLY need to learn, so I can focus in on what I need?
