What I dont get is how some one so intelligent could get global warming so wrong:

Almost no light reaches the surface, about 16 watts, so reflective and dense is its atmosphere.
Since greenhouse theory rests on 'the sun warms the surface, the surface radiates heat, GH gasses block that heat' then with the 'sun warms the surface' part removed, you dont have a GH effect occurring.
And surface temperatures can be accounted for because of its immensely heavy atmosphere, 100 times that of earth. The lapse rate, boyles law, heating through compression etc.
Anyway, perhaps he was just using it as a scare tactic to promote space travel, since he also warned about asteroid strikes.

The sun doesn't need to reach all the way to the surface. It just needs to penetrate far enough that when it's absorbed and the energy radiates back as heat, it can't escape the atmosphere. Hawking was probably right, that's Venus in a nutshell.
