I would suggest that you read the article by Dr. Joseph Newcomer.

Avoiding Multiple Instances of an Application[^]

The article covers the basic problems of multiple instances. The article appears to be outdated and does not cover kernel object namespaces. Rather than using the large functions he provides you can simply use a kernel object in the "Global\\" namespace.
