I needed that chart. I used a char for boolean Y/N, just going to change it to a number with 0/1.
At the moment, I'm not that thrilled with using it, but on day 2, I got all my stuff working fine. I won't see any thing that I can measure till Friday, when I put the 1000 parts in it, and take it for a test drive.
Guess I made the right choice on using the ODP.Net, instead of the Microsoft equivalent, since the latter is being phased out.
Today is day 3, guess I'm making good progress with it.
I decided to try it because of the complaints I received using SQL Server 2008 from customers that refused to buy my ecommerce software. They said they used a Java SQL Server, and that they wouldn't use that piece of junk, I didn't know what to make of that comment.
So when I mentioned to this customer that I would use Oracle for there project, they got all excited about it.
Just out of curiosity, what do think of the Oracle 11.g Express?

I have never used the express version, but I understand that functionality is almost the same as the standard version except that it uses only one processor and maximum database size of 4GB. There's You will also only find bitmap and cluster indexes on the enterprise edition
So for development and small applications with low performance demands it should be just fine.
Just keep in mind that there is no built in backup in the express version, so if you're having a catastrophic failure you're f***ed. Unless you create your own backup, which isn't overly easy.
But flashback queries works, and that's what I use in 99% of the cases anyway.

There's nothing wrong with using Y/N as such, it uses only one byte of storage just like the zero, while the one uses two bytes.
But 0/1 implicitly translates to boolean TRUE/FALSE in dot.net, while Y/N needs a bit of logic to convert to a boolean. Not that I recommend implicit conversions.

I think it's 11 gigs, thus the name 11g. I'm going to 0/1 on the boolean, just use to it.
I'll have to look up the backup feature, but it's 1 cpu 1 core, 1 gig, oh well it's free to use. I'm starting to like it, makes sense now.

I got the ODP client software working on the web server, the xcopy version. And the 11gXE working on the database server and tested the connection added SQL Explorer and EMS SQLServer, took about an hour to download, extract and run.
My asp.net code is working using the ODP client, so far so good.
I need to get my tables or my table file from my computer to the database server. In SQL Server 2008, I can just copy the files over and attach, is that possible on Oracle?

Hi,
On my report i have used the following to display 100 reports per page =Floor((RowNumber(Nothing) - 1) / 100).
The records are grouped by department.
However I'm getting the group header on everypage.
For example if I have 200 records for Department2 and 50 records for Department2,
on the first page Department1 is displayed followed by 100 records and on page 2 the Department1 is displayed again followed by 100 records. I want the Department1 to be displayed only once even if the next 100 records are on the next page
Any advice?

Classic ASP? There are tutorials here[^]. You'd need to learn a server-side language, and how to talk to the database.
Meaning, you'll have to learn to program it; there's little chance someone else will post the code - in this case, someone might, as it is part of the basics. If you have a specific question or get stuck, I'll gladly help.

i have crystal report delivery in which i want display product list and hv done it bt i want to display returns product list below current product sale and adjust the amount from current amount to previous product return amount. also i would like to mention that data come from two tables of same dataset. i have tried to do that by adding two tables column name at detail field it shows record current product list but not all list of previous product list. is there any other way to solve this problem? thnks in advance

You'll need a Sql-statement to fetch the data. Are you familiar with the "join"-keyword? If not, start there.

Hello All,
When designing an application, desktop or web, what is the best way to manage users that must access a database?
Is it better to have a single group that all users belong to and let the application manage all the security?
Or setup different groups with different permissions on the database and then associate users with that and whatever security the database can't manage handle that in the application?
Or is there a third way that I am just not seeing?

You will get answers for both methods.
1) Create users and handle security in the database
2) Create users in the application and connect with one user to the database.
There are pluses and minuses for both situations, however, consider this ...
Given a website like Facebook, you can create an account and have some set of permissions.
Do you really think it is creating a database user on the backend? Hmmm ... Probably not.
The real answer is up to you. You can do it either way.
I personally create one user in the database and handle all the security in the application.

I agree with David.
I usually create users/rights as structures in the database and use one SQL user/password to access the database.
I do break this rule when security is a one shot item -> You either have full access or you have zero access. In this case I won't go to the trouble to create user/rights structures and just use standard group security on the database.

So then you guys have a table with user ids and a hash for the password that is used for logging into the application and everyone is associated with the one database user id.
That makes the database management piece pretty easy.
So what is the downside to this approach?

The only downside is adding development complexity. You need to manage rights in the application which requires the development of objects manage users and thier rights.

Follow up question:
For desktop applications how do you keep the single user id / password in sync? Alot of people for good reason want to change the supplied default password so hard coding it would be a bad idea.
Is this kind of design pattern covered in a blog, article or book anywhere online?

I work in a closed environment and have no applications in third party hands so changing the db password is not an issue.
Not sure how I would handle an application at other sites. Even encrypting a connection string would require a hardcoded key somewhere along the line.
