thanks for the quick response
it doesnt hit the event cz a javasript error occurs when placing a gridview in update panel or tab control

the skills section is like a small form on its own which has fields with their own validators. so the user can fill up the fields but not click the add button. the way im doing it is store the added skills in a datatable and bind the grid to it. the whole point is the validation has to be done on the client and not the server and thus checking when i databind isnt an option

Basically my scenario is the following:
An applicant adds a set of skills
The added skills appear in a data grid
What I wanna do is validate that at least one skill has been added
The skills data grid does not appear if no skills have been added
Please let me know if you have any other approach

There is nothing wrong with the js function as I tried calling it in the document.ready and the alert was displayed

thats what im doing now but this doesnt fire any of my custom validators.. all other asp,net validators work, any ideas?

it does work but shouldnt my scenario be working by default?

yes....i know...i have plenty of records in the table that satisfy that condtion as well and yet the returned set is a null... thanks for your comments :)

it appears that the datakey value that is passed to the method is null
ill look further into it..any help is very appreciated :)
