The instructions (in the manual you linked) state that you need to turn mysql server off and then enter the above command.

This brief video does as the instructions suggest, and if you look in the comment section there are many people who do exactly what is said, and get the same result.

This does seem to be a problem even for more experienced programmers than myself.

That's what I've been avoiding but I think I'll have to start there.. thanks

Ok, thats handy to know. Thanks

First up I entered: $ --user=mysql

and the terminal returned:
-bash: --user=mysql: command not found

It seems like a lot of common commands related to MySQL are not working for me..
I don't fully understand this, but in my limited knowledge of terminal commands it seems like it might be related to the path to MySQL, but I don't know how to sort this.

No, that reference manual doesn't have anything on Mac OS..

But in general, every guide I have been to (and I tried several, including videos) doesn't have a solution to my issue. Or, its skipped over because maybe its assumed knowledge?

I'm not sure, but from the manuals I have read, terminal should run the command just fine. I have copied and pasted the above command, it isn't an syntax error.

Maybe you learnt to code in an institution, or maybe you learned a long time ago, but you should know that it can be very confusing to learn entirely on your own,and finding a good reference point is hard given the huge amounts of information there is out there..

I think its pretty pathetic for an experienced programmer to be so rude and dismissive to someone who just wants help.
