An article on a NYC get together

Introduction

This is an open article to try and gauge the interest and plan for a (possibly) early summer NYC CPian get together. If you are, or plan to be in New York City (terrorists be damned!) this summer, let us know and help plan a great together!

Location

Somewhere in Manhattan. The number of possibilities of are simply mind boggling so hopefully some comments will help give a general idea of what most people might be interested in.

Some possible ideas (none of these are necessarily mutually exclusive):

  • Visiting one of the many museums
  • Visiting one or more of the more famous NYC bars
  • Going to a big name movie
  • Visiting Central Park
  • Going to Central Park Concert
  • Jazz Clubs
  • Comedy clubs
  • Riding the subway and staring at people (it's Free and Fun - I promise!)
  • ????

When

Based one some preliminary responses, sometime after June 11 looks good. That weekend (Saturday or Sunday June 12/13) would be great. Other times are also possible if that proves too soon for people to manage or plan for.

Based on the comments below (as of Wed June 2, 2004) we have 2 votes for the weekend of June 12/13.

Getting here

Most international flights come in through JFK airport, but many also come into Newark, New Jersey. From JFK it's a taxi ride to Manhattan, and it's about $45.00 USD. Domestic flights usually come into La Guardia Airport, in Queens, though they also use JFK and Newark. Taxi fair is also around $45.00 from La Guardia. If you're driving in I believe it's fairly straight forward, just expect city traffic to be a madhouse.

The NYC Subway

Pretty much anywhere you want to get in Manhattan requires you do use the subway. Alternately you could also use my alpha version of a trans-dimensional matter transporter (it's written in Java - write once, transport anywhere!), but that's currently having some issues with garbage-collection...

Seriously the subways cost $2.00 USD each trip (i.e. each pass through the station turnstile). You can also get unlimited passes:

1-Day Fun Pass.... $7.00 USD
7-Day card....... $21.00 USD
30-Day card...... $70.00 USD
