Is this inside a master page or a user control? If so, the id will not be just 'FilterSelected'.
Just do the ViewSource of the page, find the hidden field and see what name has been given while rendering it. Use that in your javascript and you will be fine.
Or else, use:
document.getElementById('<% = FilterSelected.ClientID %>').value in your javascript, it will automatically use the correct name.

Hi,
I need help saving reports as pdf. Right now, the user has to run the report and save it as pdf manually.
Is there a way to do this dynamically?
Thanks,
Martin

They could subscribe to the report and have it emailed to them as a pdf.

Thanks, but I have to be able to run the reports and save them.

Subscriptions do have an option to output to a given directory.
Of course Reporting Services may not be the correct tool for the job. What is the end goal? Presumably the end user does something, or clicks something that generates this pdf? If you are merely using reporting services to dump a grid, or Form to PDF there are many other ways of doing it. The Infragistics Grid, for example, has Export to PDF built in, as do others. There is also an open source PDF writer out there called SharpPDF[^]. I believe the learning curve is pretty steep though. If you are in a pure web environment I would have thought Reporting Services pretty much does the job.

The end goal is to create a nice looking report and save it as pdf. I have to format the report. This is a VB.NET background application without a GUI. At the end of the day, it collects data and saves it as an easy to read pdf.
Thanks,
Martin

I am developing an app that has several controls at the top and bottom of each page (images, prev/next buttons, and labels that have dynamic content).
I decided to use a master page to display and control the common elements, and the code got a bit tricky but it works and it is solid. I did this to avoid duplicaiton of controls and code on multiple pages. I found out, though, that some people think it is a bad idea to put code in a master page.
What are the best practices for choosing to use a master page?
|
|
|
|
|
There isn't really a best practice that I'm aware of. Just like any project, appropriate techniques should be used in the appropriate place. If the master page needs to set some text or elements, that it is appropriate to set it there.
I know the language. I've read a book. - _Madmatt

The interaction of events can be tricky to manage: for example, the child page's Load event fires before the master's. I think this is why code-behind in a master page is discouraged.
But, as Mark said, you use the appropriate solutions for your problem. If your solution works, then it works.

See, Master pages are mainly used to give the consistent look to the applicatiom, like if you have some logo of application taglines etc then normally people prefer to use.
But as in your scenario as much I understood, I'll make some user control and will be using that one..

Hi there,
I am a contractor/freelancer and at my current work and other sites Gmail is blocked, I own several of my own domains and have shared hosting (Windows Server 2008, IIS7, .net 3.5, PHP).
I would like to install some software package/library on my domain that will allow me to function as close to possible as if I was using gmail, threaded conversation view, labels, sync my contacts?
Any suggestions on this? I don't mind paying for the software either.
An alternative would be to somehow implement some generic proxy hosted on my domain to allow me to browse any website e.g. Facebook which is also blocked.
Another alternative would be to host some remote workstation control web-based app on my domain to connect to my home computer? if this is even possible? Apps/websites such as logmein and the like are also blocked at work.
Thanks

Working at a client once where I needed to use Regulator (but they had a policy to not install apps unless they were approved, typically 3-6 months) I forwarded a port on my router to the RDP port on my workstation at home.
If they haven't restricted access to RDP you should be able to get away with simple port forwarding on your router.
Cheers,
-James

What is Regulator? I have full admin rights so can install software if I like. I also have RDP as I need to connect to internal servers.
I'm not sure if I can use RDP to connect out to my home computer, if they can disable this via a policy or because all traffic goes through the bank proxy?
If I setup RDP via my home computer and router can you provide a link/tutorial on how to do this? I've never done it before, thanks.

Sorry...Regulator is a regex development tool...which I wasn't allowed to install and therefore needed access to my PC.
Here are some RDP links:
XP[^]
Vista/7[^]
To configure your router, you'll need to bing your router and find out how to do it. Usually it's under something called 'port forwarding' or 'applications' and many routers have templates/presets for RDP.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
-James

Hi
Does IIS Need to develop and test ASP.NET Project in VS2005 IDE Environment. i have got an application which was developed in VS Team Suite and when i open that solution file its asking to convert. why does it happen ? and when i try to build application its showing MachineTOApplicat.. and instructing to create a Folder in Virtual directory of IIS.

VS2005 supports two different web application development platforms.
Any web application project can be hosted in IIS or just stored in the file system and dynamically hosted for debugging and local execution purposes by the built in web host (a variant of the Cassini web server that ships as part of VS2005). Which mode is stored in the project file, and I don't think it can be changed afterwards.
It sounds like you have a project set up for hosting in IIS so you must set it up accordingly. IIS is easily installed, it is an optional part of windows so no big deal.
As to it asking to convert, I guess the solution was created in VS 2003 (Team Suite). Different solution format so it must be upgraded. This would of course stuff any other developers happily working in VS2003.

Hello everybody,
I create two environments(virtual directories) of my web application, one for my work and second for testing(both have different code/soluton files means different path).
However when the execution came to dubugger on my working application code while running the applcation, testing applcation hangs of tester. I place a deugger on different page and tester is working on different page still hang the applcation of tester.
I made a changes to client.exe.config, webapp.sln, and webapp.csprj files and change the path.
Please suggest....( we r trying a lot but not working)
Thanks in advance

Are both websites running in the same application pool?
If so, your debugger has attached to the worker process and is blocking it.
You can find all worker processes by opening a cmd window and running iisapp.
In VS20xx you must only attach to your worker.

Actually i didnot find iisapp command. Please give me the procedure. I have VS 2008 Frame work and Windows XP OS.
Thanks in advance....

iisapp is a vbs script.
you must run it from the command prompt in a cmd window (run -> cmd).
In iis manager make sure there are application pools for both your debug and the test site. Create a new one if you only have one.
Assign your debugsite to a different application pool than the testsite.
When you start debugging in VS make sure you only attach to the worker for your debug application pool.
You can check the pid by running iisapp.
This is the output from one of my servers :
C:\Documents and Settings\ontSyBo>iisapp
W3WP.exe PID: 4520 AppPoolId: SharePoint Central Administration v3
W3WP.exe PID: 5624 AppPoolId: SharePoint - 9091
W3WP.exe PID: 5980 AppPoolId: SharePoint - 80
In VS you now debug -> attach to process ... select only the w3wp service that is in your debug application pool.
