ASP is BASIC syntax...
PHP is C syntax...
Do the math

WTF? he's talking about .NET... you can have C# syntax... or MC++ if you really want or even PHP[^]! That's it.
p.s no, I am not paid by Microsoft to bash PHP I just make my living with ASP.NET... you do the math

Regarding the debate of which one is faster, you have to realize that people are comparing their own personal experiences. This is not a controlled situation. You could have a very simple program written in a horribly slow language versus a complex program written in a fast language and the simple program will out perform the complex one just because it has less to do. You could also have a complex program running on a fast server out performing a simple program on a slow server...There are just too many variables.
One thing to keep in mind is .net will create a virual compiled version of your application on hand. It is compiled at the first run-time and is kept until the .net file is updated. This means that you have a compiled program going up against a .php file which has to be interpreted each time it is run. This is the step which will always make .net faster than php WHEN EVERYTHING ELSE IS EQUAL.
Speed aside, you are asking which is better for web programming. In my 21 years of programming, I've learned there is no better language. There is just better use of the one you choose. Pick one and be good at it and you will always be better than people who half-ass their way through "the newest thing" - if you know what I mean.

<br />
'Create an ADO recordset object<br />
Set rsProjectdb = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Recordset")<br />
<br />
'Initialise the strSQL variable with an SQL statement to query the database<br />

strSQL = "SELECT Table1.studentid, Table1.password FROM Table1 WHERE studentid= &studentid& "AND" password = &password& " <br />

Set rs = adoCon.Execute(strSQL) <br />

sure, obviously quotes are on wrong places. IIRC symbol & is in VB used for string concatenation merging. It should be like:
strSQL = "SELECT Table1.studentid, Table1.password FROM Table1 WHERE studentid=" &studentid& "AND password = "+&password&
However, this code is still far from being perfect. Read Colin's article about SQL Injection[^]

I want to put my DLLs in the application program directory but when I do that the IIS does not find them. The only place that I can place them is in \WINDOWS\SYSTEM32. I tried updating the PATH environment variable under the administrators account but that didn't do the trick, probably because IIS uses a different userid.
Any ideas on how to update this?
Thank you,
Glenn

Hi,
I'm writing a program in C# using .NET 2003 on IIS 6.0 and Windows/2003, that is calling some legacy code written in a .DLL. What I am seeing happen is the output files it's creating is in C:\WINDOWS\system32\inetsrv.
I do not want the files in this directory but in the application directory. I tried modifying the legacy code to specify a path but it choices to ignore it. How do I change the default directory for this application only.
Thank you,
Glenn

if you just put the gif on a page, does it animate -- i.e. is the gif itself the problem?
have you got an onclick event on your submit button?

I'm new to JS, but I saw the sample code for the panelbar and it was something I've been looking for. It works ok locally, but I took the same code and threw it up on my website and it doesn't work there. In my local editor, I get an "error on line 20, object expected" on the following line:
var objTmp;
I don't know what to do with it. Currently, it's at:
http://www.compass-i.com/XPPanelbar/PanelBar.htm
Thanks

I did upload js, css, and images, and their contents. Any other ideas?

no, you uploaded it to Js foder, and you referenced it as js folder in your markup. Your server is case sensitive. Rename folder or change your markup, then it should be ok.

hi,
HTML 4.01 spec[^] doesn't seem to support "per field" encoding, however you can set encoding for content of input type="file" .
does it help?
Out of curiosity, what is purpose of having one field encoded differently?

I want answers from different regions for questions that I post on my page. These answers will be feeded into database for statistics. The database doesn't support unicode.
How does changing the field type to file help?

It doesn't. It seems to be only case when you can set some information about content. Well you say DB doesn't support unicode... Does back-end support unicode? You can send Unicode-encoded form to server, and there convert encodings for different values and then insert them into DB. Is it possible?

You will need to do some type of backend upload such as asp_upload or cgi upload or something like that. What type of server are you working with (os, etc)?

I am working on developing a small windows program that I plan on distributing to various users. I am trying to avoid piracy of this product and have envisioned posting the program on a web server where they can go to a particular page and enter a one time code in order to start the installation of the program. I do not want the users to be able to download the setup file, but want them to be able to run the setup directly from the server which would install the necessary .exe .txt, and .mdb files on their local computer (some of which will be buried and necessary for the program to run, to assist in preventing mass file sharing.) While I know that they could of course just copy the files from their computer to another, I want to at least make it more difficult than them sending out the setup file to other users. I can handle the web setup with the one time code for download, but am not sure how to just have the setup.msi file run and begin the installation to their local machine. Most of the dialog boxes usually offer an option to Open, Save, or Cancel. Is there a way to eliminate the ability to save the setup file to the user's machine and cause the setup to run from the server?
Thanks
Marc

When I try the webservice sample code "hello world" in the Visual studio .net 2003, I seem always have problem on authetication or authoraztion. I just remove the "'" according to the explanation in the comment to change serveral line of comment into code. and Press F5 to debug it . or try http://localhost/webservice1/webservice1.asmx in the brower.
At first, I got an error "Access denied". I thought it may be ananymous access from ASPNET account or IUSR-XXX need administrator authorization. I put them into administrator group. But it does not work. I also put debugger users group and VS developer groups have administrator authorization. It does not work. I got some other server-side error as "The Web server reported the following error when attempting to create or open the Web project located at the following URL". I also change some setting on dedault web site of IIS as application protection to Low and put ASPNET account or IUSR-XXX, debugger users group and VS developer groups all have administrator authorization . But I do not know why. As the explanation in the help or book, it should not be so difficult.
My environment: window 2000 server, IIS 5.0 Visual studio .Net 2003.
My question is for the simpliest webservice. If i only try in the IDE, what
do I have to set?
