Thanks for your help.
Still unable to access advanced settings in safe-mode.
Does not appear to be a firewall problem (I do not have ZoneAlarm) because I have 5 USB-RS232 adapters and can access advanced settings on 1 of the 5.
The 4 that I can't access are missing 3 registry keys:
ForceFifoEnable
RxFIFO
TxFIFO
Replacing these key allows access to the advanced settings in the Device Manager.
Big question is how these keys got deleted on 3 XP machines on the same network.

Ok, I did some more searching but I didn't find anything new. The only thing I can think of is to check your computer privileges (assuming you are an Administrator) just to make sure nothing accidentally changed.
Mad4runing wrote: Big question is how these keys got deleted on 3 XP machines on the same network.
Malware could possibly corrupt registry keys, also any software that you might have uninstalled that used those same keys.
Trinity: Neo... nobody has ever done this before.
Neo: That's why it's going to work.

Thanks for your help.
I have administrator privilege, I had to change some of the privileges in REGEDIT to allow me to change values.
It's just weird that's it happened all of a sudden and on three computers. We regulary access the advanced settings on all 3 computers and just found this problem yesterday.
SpyBot, Webroot Spy Sweeper, and Symantec Antivirus didn't find anything.

I want to play a (trusted) game online that requires me to allow 4 incoming TCP ports in Windows Firewall. None of them appear to be used by Trojans, not that I run any programs I don't trust anyway. Is it safe to open the ports?
Thanks so much,
Pete

Basically, no, never
In reality, sometimes you have to open ports. Unless there is a known vulnerability with that game, noone will have an additional point of entry to your system, because any connections to those ports will be evaluated by the game.
Your system, however, will be more visible if anyone tries to probe these ports.
After all, I regularly open ports to play games online, but I keep them shut when I do not use the game that needs them.
Cheers,
Sebastian

An alternative, both easy and secure, might be that both of you set up a VPN between both of you.
Your VPN will create a virtual interface, that basically doesn't need a a firewall, but it only accessible over your private network. What you and your friend (well, only the "server") needs to do, is open one port.
I use openVPN for this, which is free and open source. And you can run this over obscure UDP ports.. so all portscanners will see, is -say- UDP port 38492 which is open.. and all traffic have to be encrypted and authenticated anyways.
Hope this helps, it improved my gameplay

If you are using Unix/Linux there are commands for that. I believe you should look up "ln". If you are using MS windows, then you need to start looking at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/fr-fr/library/aa365503.aspx to see how it can be done. I do remember a program called "junction.exe" written by a company and supplied for free to the public, but I can't seem to find it right now.

And that error would be???

That's quite impossible without knowing what the error is.

I encountered similar problem few days back. Turns out to be a virus that creeped in causing it. You may try running antiviru.
In my case, if I tried to run some exe after booting computer, it causes computer to restart. See if your problem is similar to this.

COnsult McAfee technical support. Alternatively, uninstall it and try a different anti-virus package - I use Grisoft's AVG.

When i starting my desktop, I have got a error saying that "Bad CMOS and CMOS Failed, press F1 to continue". I pressed F1 and it took me too CMOS setup, where i just saved and exit. The system got restarted and there is no display after that. Even the Ram checking sound also not comes there after. I tried replacing the CMOS battery as only solution i know, but it doesnt work out too.
Will anyone provide me possible cause, and also a soltion which will recify my problem.
Thanks in advance,
Uma Shanker. K
