I don't know, how about removing the virus?? There are plenty of virus scanners out there in the world.
As for the documents that have been modified, you'll have to Google for "Word remove password". There may be some utilities out there that can do this, but don't hold your breath for a "one click" solution. Recovering the documents may take a lot of manual work.
There is something to be said for backups...

Hi
been trying to get this working...I need unix "ls" command - search all *.log files with timestamp older than a month?
ls -R -l *.log
My next problem would be to feed that to "rm" command to delete them...
Thanks!!

In Vista OS the keys "DefaultUserName" & "DefaultDomainName" are not present under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
Is there any other key in the registry which stores current logged on UserName & domain? Or
I need to manually add these keys to the registry and everytime different user logs on he has to update this value to his user name?
Please suggest if there is any other alternative?
Thanks

Why do you want to use the registry? The GetUserName function gives the currently-logged-on user, including the domain name (if any).

These keys aren't guaranteed to be on any version of Windows as they are part of the process to automate a windows login. This feature permits other users to start your computer and to use the account that you establish to automatically log on. However, if you turn on autologon, using Windows XP becomes more convenient. However, using this feature can pose a security risk.
You shouldn't rely on these keys, but should use the System.Environment.UserName property or the GetUserName[^] Win32 API call.
Scott.

When we insert a USB disk, a Windows message pops up to ask user what appl user wants to run.
How do I get rid of that popup message?
(the same "action" as getting rid of the CD/DVD auto-run in the registry)
thanks.

Im guessing you mean the "AutoPlay" dialog?
You could open up gpedit.msc (from start, run), then go through Administrative Templates - System and then Mark "Turn off Autoplay", enable it for all drives...

Thanks.
I tried gpedit.msc, there is no "autoplay" under Adm Temp-System or any other places under Adm Templ.
Under "Windows Media Player", there is an item "Do not show first use dialog boxes", I tried that, but it doesnt work.

Just curiosity: what does it have to do with google?
I know how to disable "auto play" for cd, dvd (in the registry).
This is not auto-play.
This is the Windows' popup dialog which asks user what app he wants to run for this disk/media (which is just inserted).

As far as I remember, "auto run" is the name of which windows automaticaly runs files off a medium by looking at the autorun.inf file, and "auto play" is the dialog which come up for usb disks etc, asking about which program to use with that drive.
I suggest you use google to find another method of disabling auto play.

Another way is to install TweakUI from microsofts powertoys.
In the menu "My Computer -> Autoplay" you can enable or disable autoplay on different drives or types.

Thanks for the help.
I've never used TweakUI, but since there are so many problems with this "unsupported tool" (posted on msdn), I don't think I should try it (not now).

If you want to edit it directly in the registry for better control you should check out Technet[^]
This article has a table for how to set the autoplay for all different kind of drives.

Friends,
I am using Windows Vista. I want to add a shortcut to command prompt on the desktop. I want to add it in such a manner, that whenever i double click it, the command prompt should get open with Administrative privileges by default. I don't want to right click it and select "Run as Administrator". Please tell me how to do so ?

Well if you don't find some easy way you could always code a simple program to run it for you (with "Run as ..." from the code).
I know it's possible as I did it like a year ago, but I can't remember if I used the normal CreateProcess, or some other CreateProcessAsUser or alike. I can probably dig up the code if your having trouble...

Would be glad if you could tell the way to do it.

OK, I looked at my code, and this is what i did:
system("runas /user:Administrator \"setup.exe /install /noreboot\"");
Since this is a normal CMD command (whats inside the "" of system() ) you can just call it from a .bat/.cmd file.
Note that it will ask you for the password each time, and i dont think you can send the password as a param. (But you could create a c++ program which emulates the keyboard pressing keys (this would be very insecure as you can easily to fetch out the password))

There's a little program that can take care of password problem for you called sanur.exe[^]
Use it like this:
runas /u:domain\username \\servername\path\command.cmd | \\servername\path\sanur.exe password
Or read the text in the link (several pages)

Better.

That would be a bad practice.
Thanks for the cool code snippet. I am voting a '5'.
