I actually rewrote the service for VS2005 from the original VS2003 version that was based on this old post. I followed the advise of the following link:
http://www.dotheweb.net/ARTICLES/DOTNET/SERVICES.ASPX[^]
I have it up and running and working well.

What is the difference between "FIELD" & "PROPERTY" in vb.net?

Basically, a field is a member variable that is only used within the class, whilst a property exposes a field to external users of the class.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the answer & the wonderful quote. Can you give me some idea of get & set difference between the above two.
Thanks & Regards

Assume that we have a class Class1 and that there is a member variable _counter which is an integer only used inside the class. Further assume a second member variable _timeStamp of type Date and we wish callers of Class1 to manipulate it. The definition code would be something like this: (NB: code may not be syntactically correct)
Class Class1
Private _counter As Integer ' this is a field - not visible outside
' the class
Private _timeStamp As Date ' so is this except it will only be
' visible to callers via Get and Set
Public Property Get TimeStamp() As Date
' Return the value of the backing variable
TimeStamp = _timeProperty
End Property
Public Property Set TimeStamp(ByVal newTimeStamp As Date)
' Set the backing variable to the value in newTimeStamp
_timeStamp = newTimeStamp
End Property
Public Sub DoSomeProcess()
' Note that _counter may be used but not directly
' manipulated by any caller of Class1's Subs and Functions.
_counter += 1
End Function
End Class

Hi,
I have an Excel file, which is created by a .NET application.
I want to automatically transfer its data to database on a single click.
I tired to do this using DTS and using sql query(Openrowset).
But they are giving me error that file data is not formatted.
Above two ways it works fine, when I have a file created from MS Excel editor.
Problem with this file is when I open file in word pad it shows me some xml code(the .NET app. Generated file),
While the traditional files are showing me system code.
In this scenario, I am not able to write XML Schema using this file.
Can I use macro? But I think it won't be possible.

isbn inquiry specs
to create an acces database ....it will take a list of isbn no.'s and look em up on net via API an take results,
parse em out and place em in a database file.
the service found will allow upto 500 isbn's per day to be looked up.
plz rite tis to run within access...so i imagine VB wud be logical choice
in effect..
1. a list of isbn no.s will be submitted in a delimited text file,,,i can delimit it..with either a CR or a TAB character..whichever is easier
2. the program shud then take that list and create an inquiry according to the API specs
There wud be one inquiry for each isbn number
3. the inquiry wud then be submitted to the website for look up an reply
4. the reply wud then be parsed out and the data placed in the appropriate data variables and ritten to the data file.
5. the data results in seperate fields is as follows :-

So you have this assignment and it's due pretty soon I suspect... what do you want us to do? What part of this assignment don't you understand or need help to design or code?
BTW,limit your txt-speek to SMS on mobiles (cell phones) where you have limited resources (even then it is repulsive). On this forum you can - and should to be polite - write proper English with all the letters in the right places.

seriously you want to avoid access if you can use SQL server instead. access has quirks galore.

I have developed a text editing software and I was wondering how to accomplish the following.
I have set all .rtf files to open with my program by default in Windows
I would like to know how to read the data from the .rtf file while my program opens
Thanks,
Taen Karth

I don't think I quite explained it well enough. I am using a RichtextBox control and VB.NET 2005.
I can read a .rtf fle into the richtextbox control using one simple command (.loadfile).
There has to be a more straight forward way to accomplish this.
Thanks,
Taen Karth

There's a single command which loads the RTF and you want something more simple ? I don't understand ?

Obviously...
When the programs opens it needs to load the file that called it as the default app to open in...
My questions is how do you capture the file that opened it.
When windows sets a program as default editor for a file type...when that file type is clicked and it opens the program how does the program know what called it?
Thanks,
Taen Karth

I'm not sure it does. Or do you mean how does it know what file was being passed to it ? I'd say the filename is passed as a parameter.
Christian Graus - Microsoft MVP - C++

Yeah that is exactly what I mean. How does it discern the parameter and file that was passed to it and how do you code using it. I assume that the parameter it passes is the file system path to the file...which would enable me to use the .loadfile element of the richtextbox control to load the data.
Just not sure how to capture the parameter...
Thanks,
Taen Karth

Ah, OK. I still can't get that from the wording of the original question
Your program entry point is a static void main method. That method is passed an array of arguments. You can check that array, the first argument passed in there is going to be the file path, so you can capture it there, and use it accordingly.

hehe...sorry for the confusion but I, for the life of me, could not understand the logic of what was supposed to be happening. Now I understand it in theory and I am still too green to understand completely what you are telling me above.
I have no Static Void method in my project. If this is just an invisible method? that is assumed, how do I capture it?
Thanks,
Taen Karth
