I'm having all kinds of fun trying to iron out this problem, and im SURE there's an easy solution out there...
I need to use COM interop between unmanaged C++ and VB .NET to have my C++ client catch and respond to events raised in VB .NET. More specifically, I've got a VB .NET custom user ActiveX control with a valid COM interface that I've imported and used in my C++ client. I can make function calls from the COM client to the .NET server, but I cannot seem to handle events from the control.
I'm certainly no expert on COM interop, but I've browsed around and read bits of literature here and there on how to do this to no avail. The control doesn't seem to have any connection points to which I can connect to (which might be the problem), but trying to use ATL SINK_ENTRY with IDispEventImpl hasn't worked, nor has an MFC DECLARE_EVENTSINK_MAP with ON_EVENTs. I'm at a total loss and any help would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. if none of this works, would it be feasible to pass VB a C++ function pointer via its COM interface and then have VB "call" the C++ function using this pointer? They're in the same address space so it should work, but can VB call a function given only an address as a long?

Any suggestions on using a timer to check for a backup log's existence at a certain time every day? Is there some other function I should be using instead of Timer? Newbie needs help. Thanks!

At a certain time every day? Doesn't sound like a job for a Timer. Sounds more like using the Scheduled Task control panel. Then your app wouldn't have to bother with the time or a countdown timer.

Can I create a scheduled task programatically? This was written as a service. Thanks!

If it was written as a Service, then you can't launch it with the Scheduler. What does this thing do? Why the service?

The service was designed to access a network drive once a day and verify that a certain backup file exists and that the size is greater than 500MB. If the file is there and meets the size requirement it sends an email to several people letting them know the backup was successful, else it sends an email indicating backup failure. I wrote it as a service to ensure it would run without user intervention and whether or not a individual was logged into the server it is running on. This has been my first project and a good learning experience. I appreciate any advice you have to offer. Thanks!

Well, if you want to keep it as a service, then you would have to use a Timer to wake up every so often, poll the system for the time, then see if it is time for the service to do its job. Configuration might be done in an .INI file, for time to wake up and do its job, then restart the service.

Hello i am working in VB6, using regular run of the DTpicker control. I had 2 requirements one to allow a blank in the dtpicker, which is easy set it to custom properties and put a space in the custom format field.
The second one is to allow invalid dates as well,
for example
31/04/2004 - April showing 31 days
All 30 day months should be allowed 31 days as well
The business logic requires such a situation. does anyone know how to do that?
Thanks in advance

Dear ppl... Im an intern and recently my boss ask mi to work on a vb project... This is my first time using AS400 wit Vb and i have no idea wat to do....
I did manage to setup e ODBC(took mi a day to understand) and managed to retrieve e data from e AS400 server and its now in access format... But can any1 enlighten mi or show mi sample codes as to how to retrieve e data from AS400 and display it in vb? My main problem is wit e connection strings and i have no idea wat i need to type in...
Dim strConn As String, strSQL As String
Set cnn = New ADODB.Connection
Set rst = New ADODB.Recordset
cdgDataBase.ShowOpen
strConn = "User Id=Dian; Data Source=AS400_Test; DATABASE=SISTFL12T; Password=dian9" & cdgDataBase.FileName
strSQL = "select * from SIBRND"
With cnn
.Provider = "Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0"
.ConnectionString = strConn
.Open
The above is wat i did so far but dun think its e right codes... Can any 1 help mi out thank u bery bery much!

You first problem is your using the wrong Provider. The 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' provider is for Microsoft Access databases only. Your going to need a Provider that works with AS400. You can find one at www.hit.com.

Hi,
I'm struggling a bit with getting my programme to automatically encrypt a set of files when the programme closes. My programme writes the files during run-time in response to people's answers to certain questions. I don't want others able to snoop on this data and thus need the programme, when the CLOSE button is pressed, to automatically encrypt all the files which have been written to that session,
Any help would be much appreciated.

VB6 or VB.NET?
Do you really NEED to encrypt the files or just keep them from the eyes of others?
If you are on a system that has access privileges set up you should be able to just keep the data file for each user inside their own profile space so that no other logged on user can access them.

VB.Net.
Unfortunately I really do need to encrypt the files since they would contain confidential information which should not be accessible to anyone except people with admin privileges ( IOW, the people entering the info shouldn't even have access to the entered info).
I've looked into the various other ways of doing this and I really think encryption is the way I need to go, unfortunately I haven't found a way to enact it without first loading the file into a textbox and then encrypting only that text. Unfortunately that's a no go also.

Hi.
I am trying to design some simple games using VB 6.( Eg: Picture matching )
Currently, I wish to create levels of diffculty that the user can choose ( Number of boxes to appear on the screen) and also a timer to record the time taken to finish the game.
Can anyone help?
Thank You.
|
|
|
|
|
I guess you can set the number of boxes by creating a control array from code (define the element 0 in your form, not from code)
The timer: use the Timer control, make it a countdown timer (define a variable, for ex. an integer,s et it to a value and start the timer)
Dim timeout as Integer
timeout = 60 ' 60 x interval = 1 minute
Timer1.Interval = 1000 ' 1 second
Timer1.Enabled = True
and in the timer event:
timeout = timeout - 1
lblTime.Caption = timeout & " second(s) left"
This will create a countdown for 1 minute...

I have coded a project using VB.NET that uses a speech library called AXinterop.httslib.dll
This program runs on win98se & win2000 simply by dumping all files on the target PC and it goes!(+ dot NET of course)
This failed on XP - XP proclaimed the dll was not registered!
So I used the deployment installer in Vis Studio to create an installer to register the dlls.
The program still fails to run. XP proclaims a dll is not registered!
Using REGASM.EXE to make a .reg file for the offending dlls, I could see that both the MSI installer & regasm.exe produced the same entries under the ROOT -but it still won't work!!
Do I need to make reg entries under local machine &/or user as well ... ?
Someone please help! My program works fine under win98se & win2000...

I am looking for a robust way for an application written in VB6 to communicate with a VC++6 application. The information flow needs to be bi-directional.
I have a rich GUI written in VB6, and an application that uses various third party libraries to do some intensive processing and written in VC++6.
For the prototype, I used AppActivate to launch the VC++ app and use SendKeys to drive the VC++ program interface.
When I realised I needed bi-directional communication quickly, I hacked in use of the clipboard and pass text strings in both directions.
I now have some synchronisation glitches, and given that my approach precludes the user from cutting and pasting using the clipboard, I'm looking for a more robust approach.
Whereas I can find many IPC mechanisms if I'm writing entirely in VC++, I can find few examples using VB, and none linking VB to VC++.
Can you offer any suggestions.
TIA

If an ActiveX control returns a pointer to a TIFF image and the size of the image (both integers), can a VB.NET App load the image from memory?
There's no such thing as a bad beer... some are just better than others.
|
|
|
|
|
If the pointer is the handle to a bitmap, you can use Image.FromHbitmap:
intPtr = new IntPtr( pointer )
img = Image.FromHbitmap( intPtr )
|
|
|
|
|
Of course... the ActiveX control returns a pointer to an in-memory TIFF image (not a bitmap).
