I need to start using VB.net. Can anyome tell me where to start? I have Visual Studio 2005 installed, but it seems a bot overwhelming I must admit. Any links to tutorials for beginners will be appreciated.
I also have a recent VB6 project that I need to upgrade to VB.net. Is there a quick way to do this?

There is an upgrade tool, but it's not very good. This is b/c Microsoft made a choice and made VB.NET correct te horrors of VB6 instead of trying to be reverse compatible. The one concession they made is all the stuff in the VisualBasic namespace. You may use this early on, but wean yourself from it ASAP. it's all bad.
You need to buy a beginners book and regard that you're learning a new language. VB6 has been dead for 6 years, I suggest you throw yourself at this, b/c you're very late to the party.

Thanks for your reply.
If you know of any good books please let me know. Should I learn about .net before I start with vb.net?

That's not really possible, .NET is a framework, you need to learn it in the context of VB.NET, or C#.
I'm sorry, I've never learned VB.NET, I went C++->C#, I only answer here b/c knowing C# means I know a lot of VB.NET b/c it's often framework stuff. But, I would hope there are books for people moving from VB6, that cover the stuff that you need to know, and not the stuff you know already.

Hi,
I am working on a project whereby I need to create a scale down version of a dom explorer. I am able to parse the html at this point. What I need to do now is as I select a node (eg ) it must hightlight the selected table element in the page viewer section, similar the firebug.
Any ideas where I can find some information on doing this?
Thanks

I have a class derived from a DataGridViewColumnHeaderCell. When I attempt to open the
file for viewing, VS attempts to open the file with a designer.
I'm not sure what designates the file as having a designer. The DataGridViewColumnHeaderCell doesn't have one.
Is there a way to prevent VS from trying to open the file with a designer?
My Imports are:
Imports System
Imports System.ComponentModel
Imports System.Windows.Forms.VisualStyles
Imports System.Reflection

I guess you've created a user control derived from that class. If you create a vanilla class derived from that class, instead of choosing new user control, that won't occur.

There is a ListBox as a Private Internal class to my class.
This is what VS is seeing and is causing the error.
I can do one of the following:
1. Put a simple class derived from Control before my class in its file
2. Move the internal ListBox class to a different file.
3. Make a designer or attach one to my class.
Thanks for the help.

I've noticed you often post questions that if you took a little time with Google you could get your answers.

whats the point in having a coding forum if you just point them to google everytime they have a coding question, often google just points you to another forum anyway. Just answer a question for once, i'm starting to think you people don't have any other response than 'see goggle'.

|

Exactly what do you mean when you say "you people?"
|
|
|
|
|
i mean people who always tell people to go to google, which seems to be the whole damn forum community at the moment.

If you read my article on how to use google, I make it clear there. Some things, forums are great for. Other things, are just too complex to be covered in a forum reply, and/or are just so straightforward, that encouraging people to use google will give them the skills they need to help themselves.
Not everything is answered with 'try google', but top level, non specific questions, often are. By non specific I mean, not specific to their problem, but something that lots of people do, and is widely documented.

Do you want to know all the text before ','? In which case it would be something like this:
dim p as integer = me.rtb1.text.indexof(",")
me.rtb1.select(0,p)

hi all,
in my program, i query for some data to the database, which is located on web server and have MY-SQL database.Result of query is stored in dataset. when i parse text related field(using system.encoding) of dataset, then it does not give me proper value. for example, if text contains some latin or greek word, then i does not parse them properly
(for limitation reason, i does not post those words, because '?' replace these characters )
i use following statement for parse above code
Encoding.UTF8.GetString(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(DatasetFieldWhichContainsValue)) or
DatasetFieldWhichContainsValue
Encoding.UTF7.GetString(Encoding.Default.GetBytes(DatasetFieldWhichContainsValue))
.
.
and many more. but all failed
anybody have idea, that how can i resolve this problem ?
