Hello all,
I don't know if i posted on the correct forum (i'm thinking i should use the Architecture forum) but here goes.
There is talk at my workplace that we should move the DAL and Business Layer on a server and just ship the interface. The interface would connect to our server and use the Business Layer.
How can this be done, except of course, web services (and probably WCF)?
I would use Web services, but the project manager does not like that idea.

That's how most SAAS (software as a service) apps work. You'll need a mechanism to allow the client side presentation layer to communicate with the server; I've been using WCF to do this with much success. I highly recommend it.

If you want to implement SaaS, then you need to consider the mechanism through which the data is going to be transported over the wire. If it's anything other than an HTTP/HTTPS format, then you are going to have trouble convincing other companies to accept it because they may have to open up the firewalls - something that a lot of companies are against.

It's not his place to like or dislike the idea. A project manager should not have the final say in technological decisions; that's not what he's there for.

I am currently opening a new form from my main form, then have that open another form. I can do this using the below code
List list = new List();
list.ShowDialog();
What i want to do is to be able to close the original form and the next form from the last form I open.
so there for
form1->open form2 from form1->open form3 from form2->close form1 and form2 from form3.
any help would be great thanks.

Hi,
You may try setting the Visible property to False on loading of the Form.
E.g. On Form1_Load, Open Form2 and and set the visible property of Form1 as False.
Similarly do it for the remaining Forms.

IMO you must have FormManager to show and close a form
the FormManager contains lastOpenedForm field, and a method (ShowForm) to show a form
i.e :
1. you call ShowForm to show a particular form
2. before form show check if lastOpenedForm wether null or not, if not null, call to close that form and dispose it
3. set lastOpenedForm with opened form
to do this you have to know about invoking a method and there are some articles about that in CP, or be friend with Google

thanks for the answers but I dont think that is what i am after. When I press a button on form3 I want to close form2 and form1. How do i do this? I try to specify there name then .close() but it doesnt work. How do i pass the name of the old forms to the new form?

Listen,
USE USERCONTROLS
Create only the main form and create as many usercontrols as you wish and load then in the main form, that will solve you problem if i get it right.
You my have to type code from start.
If for some reason you need forms, use child/parent forms method(child forms that load inside a parent form).

Hi,
These are printers in printServerA i.e.
printerA
printerB
printerC
...
On machineServerA, I would like to install all the printers which sit on printServerA.
So after installation of printers on machineServerA, when you go to printers And Faxes you see a list of printers which are already installed in printServerA.
you see a list of the folowing printers in machineServerA as follows:
\\printServerA\printerA
\\printServerA\printerB
\\printServerA\printerc
...
How can I do this in code please?

One way to do this would be to create a process that calls the PrintUIEntry function in PRINTUI.DLL (via RUNDLL). See this[^] article.

This is what I have at present and the only thing is to add these printers to a remote machine, i.e. machineServerA
This is the code that I run locally (printServerA machine) and gets the installed printers.

Hi,
I have been going through the link for command line that you sent initially.
I really do not think that this does what I am after.
Please refer to my first post which is something as follows:
I would like to run a c# code on printServerA which gets the list of printers locally and then it installs these printers on remote machines.
I have done the first part which I get the list of installed printers on printServerA but do not know how to add these printers to remote machines i.e. machineServerA

I believe the command's /c flag will allow you to target a remote machine.

I am going to release a dll. But I am using some log files in that dll. Is this a good practice or not? Should I create log files or not????

You may want to consider using a configuration option to control logging.

it depends on your need for your application, if you have to log activities or error for further analysis then you put log files
basically if your application is 'product base' software and you need to make some improvements when application deployed in your clients, you need log files and log object must be set to do log or not in configuration of your application.
i do that for some my application so the my client can send me error log as email attachment to me or do it automatically when internet connection is establish. When we solve that problem we will deliver patch to our client.
NO BEST PRACTICE HERE JUST WHAT YOU HAVE TO IN YOUR APPLICATION
