I came across Magic Software back in the early 90's, I have to say (at the time) it was very inmpressive but too expensive for the company I was employed by at the time. I haven't come across it since, so I assumed like many other companies, it had gone under. Great product, dodgy name

Hi,
I am using sqlserver 2008, How can I calculate the total memory occupied by the Database with tables (>30) and also data in it.
I mean if I have DB (DB_name) and with few tables(tblabc, tbldef......) with data in it, how to calculate the total memory occupied by the database in the server.
Kindly Help me.

I executed the query, it showed, 1408 and 2768 without data in database.
even with data it showd the same numbers.

Well have a rat around the management studio, sysobjects also has lots of info.
Take a look at the system views, they are design to give you info on your databases.

Right Click your database in Object Explorer, Select Reports - Standard Reports - Disk Usage
explore these reports for common reqs.

Size is the size of mdf and ldf file in 8K pages. Divide the value by 128 to get the size in MB.
It might come same with/without data depending upon the amount of data your DB holds.

Hi,We are migrating our DB from MS Access to SqlServer 2005. So could anybody please let me know how to copy the data in MS Access tables, first to an XML file and then to a table in Sql Server 2005, using C# as programming language and .NET 2005 as platform.

What happenned to your migrate from Access to SQL - what you are trying is not the best way of doing it.
If you assume that SQL Server can read a datatable written as an xml file you could read the table into the client C# and wtrite it out using datatable.writexml(filename)

I thoight that was a setting on the database not the server - nope just checked.
I can change it in Management studio 2005+, you may need to use a script to change it in 2000. Can you right click on the server in QA and get the properties of the database?

This is how it is being done in sql server 2000.first from enterprise manager right click on the database.
2)choose new database and create a new database with the name of your sql server database.
3)Right click on the new database created and from tasks choose import data.
4)A dialog box will appear.you have to specify the datasource there,which is microsoft access in your case.Then just follow the instructions and you will get your database migrated.

Like this:
1. Parse the information.
2. Split the information into bite-sized pieces that match your table structure.
3. Use SQL (or a Stored Procedure) to insert the information.
4. Repeat until you have no packets left to process.

so i saved the packets to a excel file. from here i want to write a code that would let me read from that file and send that data to the database but am having problems writing that code to do this .., do you have any reading material on how this can be done

Last night I wanted to copy an Access 2007 .mdb file and the thing was 618 MB !  I know that there is no way there could be that much data, so I did a compact & repair and the size went down to 6 MB.
The other interesting thing about this .mdb is that there is actually no user data stored in it. It contains just the forms, queries, reports, modules. It references the data tables stored in a separate .mdb via linked tables.
What could have caused this to grow to such a large size ? I never had this problem with Access 2003.
I really can't stand any of the Office 2007 products.

Why is it so? Because Access doesn't do garbage collection or cleanup particularly well.
Usually, your file will swell rapidly if you are creating temp tables through code or make-table queries.
Since you say it's your front end, one way to combat this issue is to have it compact and repair on exit.

This problem has been around for ages - I remember having a compact method in access 97, the user could check the size via a form and would decide when to compact the database.
This is one of the (minor) reasons to move to a decant database platform.
