The point is that there have been massive computer-tech advancements in multiple fields (particularly medical, which really puts "handys" in their place on the importance scale), and they're whining that there hasn't been another revolution in portable phones?
If nothing but portable phones matter, then yes, we're in a very narrow fanbois territory.

But he's only saying there's been no innovation in phones, not that there's been no innovation. "Fanbois" is irrelevant.

And what I'm saying is that phones are pretty much irrelevant, compared with all the amazing developments that are actually good for society, save lives, and improve the standards of life of countless people, so excluding (or showing no awareness of) the good stuff is borderline idiotic.
I could have just said "This idiot should get a life", but I decided not to be so insulting.

So what? He just happens to be talking about phones. It doesn't mean that other things aren't important. But smartphones have also added value too. I think you're just being a contrarian for the sake of it.

When I hear claims about Apple pioneering anything I think "Pioneering in what sense?", as if anyone followed in their footsteps Apple would in all likelihood sue them for everything they had.

They created the current paradigm in the mobile industry. So pioneered in that sense.
As is almost always the case the tech innovation is not original to them but they put it all together in a sufficiently usable format that caused everyone else to follow suit.

I think you have a good point there - Apple probably help to show that a particular technology can make money and others then follow in the technology or are at least challenged to improve.
I think Android was around at the same time as the iPhone, except the early Android releases were no way as decent as UI iOs exposed. So Android had to catch up and it has done a really good job of now having a decent UI.

Typically HP sells printers for super cheap and then charges exorbitant prices for the required ink, leaving consumers paying hundreds a year if they want to keep this printer printing well. Because we're a paperless society now

You should print some posters declaring a paperless society.

Now this is an ethical matter!

To be “penny-wise and pound-foolish” is to obsess over small savings while making expensive mistakes – for example, spending huge amounts of money on a credit card just to redeem a few rewards points. Time to get your head into the clouds?

Warner Bros. Pictures has unveiled plans to use Cinelytic's AI project management system to assist in making decisions on movies during the "greenlight process." I expect a bunch of new Terminator movies soon

well, at least there will be some sort of "intelligence" to the decisions with AI.

So either:
• It's the software equivalent of your typical HR bod who's involved in hiring. i.e. it will make recommendations based solely on the number of keywords it notices. Similar levels of intellectual ability will be plain to see.
• It has been fed data (which may as well be random data) about movies, and details of how much money they made, and will make decisions based on a typically AI black-box decision-making process that will get lucky once, so will be seen as the digital messiah by investors.
Either way, be prepared for the AI bullsh1t to be hugely expanded into hollywood-style AI bullsh1t.

"Reference design" has the potential to revolutionize virtual reality comfort. And I wear my VR goggles at night, so I can, so I can keep track of the visions in my eyes
And you'll look slightly less silly wearing them?

Facebook, Google, and Amazon have a lot to learn from Margaret Hamilton, who coined the term “software engineering” while she was working on the code for the Apollo 11 mission to the moon. Because she is (or was) a rocket scientist
