I don't recall who told it but:
"What today is written as science fiction, might tomorrow be remembered as a reportage"
M.D.V.
If something has a solution... Why do we have to worry about?. If it has no solution... For what reason do we have to worry about?
Help me to understand what I'm saying, and I'll explain it better to you

It’s time to get jazzed about the future of the .NET ecosystem! A chance to rewrite all your .NET Framework apps?
|
|
|
|
|
I have today been looking for a bit of information regarding this, because our App is facing a new major version (total re-do).
What a headache...
.Net Framework is a bit risky for the future, we are already re-doing the basics, don't want to do a big port in a couple of years.
.Net 5 is not released yet and as always the first versions are going to be a bit "dangerous"
.Net Core 3.0 or 3.1 is a start, they are already out there long enough to have grown a bit stability and madurity. But... If you don't trust the "start doing it in .Net Core, porting it to .Net 5 will be trivial"
Good that I am not the one having to decide (although I have to debate it too)

WHY do you have to port YET AGAIN? It's all crap.

That's exactly my thought and my problem.
I don't trust it will be that trivial. They have already messed it up several times, so why should this time be different?

There's a document somewhere that the Longterm Servicing (LTS) Version of .NET 5 will be .NET 6 next year. So if you decide to upgrade it's probably best to skip 5 and target 6, at which point it will be much more solid and, being LTS, you can relax for the next decade.

Good to know, thanks.
Pity that we'll need / have to start our re-do in near future.

Mark_Wallace wrote: That's one higher than all the other .NETs! That actually is their intention behind this versioning.
They jumped the .Net Core 4.xx to avoid confusion with current .Net Frameworks
And the .Net 5.xx should symbolize, this is the new version as the future of both Framework and Core.
On the one hand, seems logical.
On the other hand... if they wouldn't come with one shiny new product so fast, the confusion with versions and compatibilities would be way smaller.
